Anyone know of a place that sells used lawn mower engines around here? I need a 8-10 HP, preferably Tecumseh horizontal shaft. Somebody gave me a '72 sears tractor, cept they put a vertical straight pipe on the exhaust, and didnt ever put a can on it. I got the piston free, turned the engine over, and water shot out the top of the pipe. The inner guts are perhaps salvageable, but i dont know if its worth it. 8/4/2009 9:05:46 PM |

^^^harbor freight sells the robin subaru and chinese honda knock off engines for dirt cheap. they run very well, and most have all the modern tech of ohv, etc.
first, i'd just pull the head on what you've got though. unless the cylinder wall is really screwed up/pitted from rust, run the damn thing. you could always do a quick and dirty ball hone too and maybe slap some fresh rings on. valves might be bent if it was ever attempted to be started with the water or actually ran, but small engine valves are easy to bend back into alignment well enough to run good. just take a big flat head or something, stick it in the port, and pry against the head of the valve until it's close. turn it until it seats and check the seal. you'd be surprised at how well a small engine will still run with "serious" problems.

there ya go, can't beat this: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66492
i'd say CL is you best bet for used stuff. ebay has people selling a lot stuff cheap too, but i'd be kind of leary of that. i can say first hand that the brands harbor freight carries are decent, you can look at them in the store, and there's no hassle with returns or warranty issues. 8/5/2009 6:23:33 AM |
