I don't think I'll be able to afford school this fall...I tried for a stafford loan but I was told I don't qualify because of my academic progress. I'm going into the financial aid office first thing in the morning to get down on my knees and cry.
8/5/2009 4:52:56 PM
goodluck sir
8/5/2009 4:53:47 PM
good luck.
8/5/2009 4:55:00 PM
I changed my major twice, and failed a semester because of depression...but I didn't know what was going on until after it was all said and done, so its not on record at the university. I feel like that is reason enough to be going into a 6th year of school. But standards of academic progress say otherwise.
8/5/2009 5:08:00 PM
try going to the counseling center, you'd be surprised what those people can change around on your academic record

8/5/2009 5:39:46 PM
Why was this moved to Chit Chat? It seems like a pretty serious topic in my opinion.
8/5/2009 5:39:48 PM
it's a serious topic, but more of a declaration than a thread.
8/5/2009 5:40:23 PM
you can get entire semesters worth of grades dropped at the counseling center, no joke. after the fact too
8/5/2009 6:02:42 PM
^yep, i've done it
8/5/2009 6:13:48 PM

8/5/2009 6:22:20 PM
get a personal loan and hope you get a job when you graduate
8/5/2009 6:22:56 PM
I guess the real question is how many more credits do you need to graduate? If it's only like a semester, then worst case scenario you can put that shit on a credit card[Edited on August 5, 2009 at 6:30 PM. Reason : a]
8/5/2009 6:25:07 PM
Since this thread is in Chit Chat now...If you're broke and dumb, you really should be turning in your Jew card.Since this thread was in The Lounge...Time to head over to the Counseling Center. Alternatively, if you're close to graduating like quagmire02 said, a personal loan from a bank or family member might not be a bad call. Credit card is a bit riskier, since while you could probably scam 0% for 12 months, you're going to get raped if you can't pay it off at the end.Alternatively, there's really no shame in taking a semester off, working, and saving up some money to go back.
8/5/2009 6:35:33 PM
My bank won't even give a personal loan for anything under $5k. They just issue a credit card. So I am basing my advice on my bank's practices.
8/5/2009 6:37:38 PM
survival of the fittest motherfucker
8/5/2009 6:52:48 PM
Get under that desk, son
8/5/2009 6:54:43 PM
bdmazur is a really smart guy. Probably just hit a minor bump. He'll figure something out.
8/5/2009 7:02:25 PM
you're out of money and keep getting bad grades. what you need is a job.
8/5/2009 7:02:45 PM
take your knee pads with you son
8/5/2009 7:07:57 PM
I put this in the lounge so I could get advice from others who have dealt with similar situations. Sorry I didn't clarify.I was being helped by my parents along the way, but their restaurant has suffered greatly in the past year and they can't help anymore. But now that its free range in chit chat and everyone is going to be giving me shit, i'll clear some things up.
8/5/2009 7:32:21 PM
8/5/2009 9:23:27 PM
If you can qualify for a $5k loan and take it, could you make payments with the remaining money until you graduate and then pay the rest off?
8/5/2009 9:35:53 PM
^^Based on what's he's said, it's less about the grades he made, and not getting enough credit hours completed in the school year.
8/5/2009 9:43:53 PM
I know this is TWW and you're a stupid Mets fan and all, but this sucks. I've been there, hope it works out dude.
8/5/2009 9:48:00 PM
this sounds like something roddy could help with
8/5/2009 9:55:15 PM
Thanks Ernie, and yeah ambrosia1231 has it right[Edited on August 5, 2009 at 10:13 PM. Reason : -]
8/5/2009 10:12:15 PM
what about parent plus loan?or does that follow under the academic progress as well?you could try going through a bank with your parents as a cosigner for an education loan
8/5/2009 10:25:17 PM
My parents and I discussed doing that, we'll figure things out after I see if the financial aide office will budge
8/5/2009 10:40:18 PM
So, what is the time frame on getting help from the counseling center with reversing a semester's grades?
8/5/2009 10:40:48 PM
8/5/2009 10:44:22 PM
Did a quick search and found this file...may be helpful:http://www.ncsu.edu/counseling_center/forms/files/withdrawal_request_info.pdf
8/5/2009 10:44:24 PM
8/5/2009 10:53:07 PM
^^ That is very helpful information. There also does not seem to be a limit on when you can request retroactive dropped classes. So basically, if you took time off to get their problem straight, there shouldn't be a problem with the application. Like, if the problem semester was 2 or 3 semesters ago, and you weren't here for the next semester, you should still be able to go back and ask for the drop from 2 semesters ago.^ I actually meant for the counseling centers help... personal loan / credit card will cover that easily. talk to your bank and ask your parents if they would be willing to cosign.
8/5/2009 10:54:28 PM
ncsu dropped part of my financial aid that i had left over from a scholarship due to me co-oping, but didnt decide this until the day before classes started so i called them and threatened to drop out off school, they magically came up with a few g's (part of it being a freshman scholarship even though I was a senior)
8/5/2009 10:55:03 PM
Except that the problem lies in the fact that he didn't get 24 credit hours completed in the school year; it's not about bad grades.
8/5/2009 10:55:10 PM
I have no credits for last fall, 12 for this past spring, and 7 for the summer
8/5/2009 11:07:35 PM
i dont know how ncsu's office is, but my schools office is very strict on financial aid, since it is the governments money. i dont know, however, if the progress towards graduation is a ncsu thing or a gov't thing.it sounds like parent plus may end up being your best bet. its not bad, but it is subject to a credit check on your parents.
8/5/2009 11:07:37 PM
assuming my parents' restaurant doesn't go bankrupt before it gets paid off
8/5/2009 11:08:33 PM
Try to get last fall labeled as a medical leave. That's what it was, and if you get it officially labeled that it makes it much harder for them to screw you.
8/5/2009 11:11:55 PM
8/5/2009 11:12:29 PM
The process of getting financial aid is, at its best, comparable to unlubed anal rape.
8/5/2009 11:14:53 PM
It's not that badset em up
