I interviewed with some folks at Stanford on Tuesday for a leadership position on a collaborative group with UC Berkeley. The group aims to get in on some of the DOE stimulus funds that are being pushed out for developing "smart grid" technologies (kinda what I'm doing now).

I received a call this afternoon saying that I'm one of the top 3 candidates and will know their final decision by next week.

I'm actually kinda excited

this thread, while exciting, is lacking in the detail and comedy that has led us to enjoy joenumbers blog posts. please work on that.

thanks,

Right now we're developing intelligent control systems that have a much more rapid and adaptive response than conventional control systems, utilizing synchrophasors in order to take into consideration a larger part of the grid as opposed to just a small section as is currently being done.

These devices will either interface into existing relay communications networks or we will develop another communications layer just for these devices. What's cool is a lot of these devices will be connected to the Internet, which in itself adds in a lot of security risks. Last week we hired a couple of CS folks who are tasked with beefing up the devices' security and closing up any vulnerabilities that may exist.

I'm heading out there tomorrow for a follow-up interview on Monday. I've got to put together another presentation and a proposal on what direction I'd take the program.

I'm pulling my hair out over here.

I think the formality of prof would overide the casual joe, I think it'd simply be Professor Numbers

good luck man

just curious, what type of job title should I be searching for to get into doing what you're doing?

i still have enough classes left in my masters to better tailor it toward that area, and it sounds pretty interesting

Well I didn't get the job, it went to some guy from MIT. One of the reasons given was that I don't have enough publications, something I've been avoiding by working for a non-academic institution

I was actually looking forward to a change... Oh well

I agree. fucking MIT.

i once had a principal engineer at a job who was an MIT alum.

smart as fucking hell, but about the most socially-stunted, obnoxious, and insufferably pedantic person ive ever worked with.

only MIT undergrads are socially stunted...

graduate school versions of MIT people are MUCH more likely to be normal...

ah, I skipped the last few posts

I worked with an MIT guy at my last job. The guy wasn't dumb by any stretch but I certainly wasn't ever blown away by any of his brilliance.

see if you can get on an IEEE or ANSI review panel with your company, like the one for the NESC. you could also write some articles for T&D magazine.
