Bitches seem to be incapable of taking a pill everyday at the same time.

Also, antibiotics will render The Pill completely useless. Bitches seem to only hear their doctors and friends say what they want to hear.

I read something last week that said that while most doctors tell you antibiotics do affect the pill, they actually don't have any effect.

Quote :
" While many people, including many doctors, believe that antibiotics interfere with the effectiveness of the birth control pill, the fact is there are very few medications that have actually been proven to decrease the pill's effectiveness. Studies do show that antibiotics can affect the excretion of contraceptive chemicals in urine, but levels in the blood do not change, and there is no increase in pregnancy rates.

A few medications do stimulate the liver's ability to metabolize contraceptive chemicals, and these medications may indeed lower the pill's effectiveness. If you are taking these medications, you should use a back-up method of contraception (like a condom) while using that medication and until you have completed an entire pill cycle. These medications are:

-- Rifampin (used to treat tuberculosis)
-- Phenobarbitol (sedative and anti-siezure medicine)
-- Phenytoin, Dilantin (anti-seizure medication)
-- Carbamazepine, Tegretol (anti-seizure medication)
-- Griseofulvin (potent anti-fungal)

Of these, only anti-seizure medications are widely prescribed. Common antibiotics do not cause a problem, but if you want extra reassurance, go ahead and use a condom while you are on the antibiotics and until that pack of pills is finished. "

instead of listening to OB-GYN or even pharmacist, how about doing your own research like Skwinkle just did. Hint, just go to the WHO website and do a search.

GGMon & hgtran

here is the deal. first off Rifampin is an antibiotic, so that is basically case in point. however the main concern for it is with generics. there is a much larger risk with antibiotics when women use generics (and many do) because the levels in generics can fluctuate by +/-20% at any given time. thus any reduction in effectiveness can have a big impact in a situation where the effectiveness has already been reduced.

as far as quick research i went to the mayo clinic while typing this and found

Quote :
"
Hypothetically speaking, other antibiotics, particularly penicillin and tetracycline derivatives, could impair the effectiveness of birth control pills in a small percentage of women. Researchers can't rule out this possibility, but no large studies have proved such an effect.

If you're taking a newer, extremely low-dose oral contraceptive, you could be more susceptible to this potential antibiotic effect. If you're concerned, consider using a barrier method of contraception for the duration of your antibiotic prescription.
"

a low dose would be akin to the -20% swing in generics. but feel free to test it out all you wish.

^I'm not arguing that antibiotic does not interfere with oral contraceptive, but only a FEW of them.
and also
Quote :
"because the levels in generics can fluctuate by +/-20% at any given time."

you need to do a read up on the bioequivalency and the process to get generic drugs approved by the FDA.

to thumper
right, because the World Health Organization is just "someone on the internet". Like I said, do the research yourself.

I've been told for 10 years that antibiotics fuck with the pill. I don't care if God appeared to me in an epiphany and told me I could fuck the whole Carolina Panthers Offensive Line bareback while taking antibiotics on the pill - I still wouldn't fucking do it.

I predict hgtran will have an oops kid soon.

Seriously, using too many methods of birth control is not a problem. Not using enough can create huge problems. Even under ideal conditions, using only a single method of birth control made me nervous. I'm ok now that I have my tubes tied though, lifetime failure rate is about the same as the failure rate for condoms in one year (2%).

It's a hormonal form too, so I imagine it would be affected by anything that would affect the pill, antibiotics or not.
