Me and my GF were in Myrtle Beach this past weekend and got into this discussion. As anyone who has ever been to the beach before knows, these motherfuckers are on every damn corner. They all sell the same shit, and all have the same promotions. "3 beach towels for $10!!!!!"So, my question is, how the fuck do they make any money? Factoring in overhead, the sheer amount of product they have on hand at all times, and the fact that they only have traffic like 4 months out of the year, I can't see how it can be a profitable business.Help me understand, tdub.

I believe they have a friend secretly set it on fire and then collect on the insurance./thread

because the cost of the product to stock versus the retail cost of the product is a MASSIVE profit margin
8/12/2009 6:06:08 PM
Yeah, and I can see that. But I still can't see how the retail mark-up alone can carry a business that saturates the market, rents space in the most prime locations, and only does any substantial business 4 months out of the year.[Edited on August 12, 2009 at 6:09 PM. Reason : a]

you sell enough 75 cent bikinis for $30 a pop and you'll turn a serious profit....even in 4 months
8/12/2009 6:13:35 PM
hermit crabs. that's the secret
8/12/2009 6:13:43 PM
When I was down there they had all swimwear 3 for $10, but I guess it is pretty late in the season. Maybe they are $30 in April
8/12/2009 6:14:38 PM
i like it when one is right next door to another one
8/12/2009 6:18:20 PM
^ That was what sparked the discussion. There were 2 right across the street from each other. I mean, why pay double the rent?[Edited on August 12, 2009 at 6:19 PM. Reason : a]

^4 ha I think a hermet crab is the only thing I've ever bought there.
8/12/2009 6:20:52 PM
were they both wings or was one a waves
8/12/2009 6:21:35 PM
both wings, or maybe they were both waves. Not sure, but I know they were both the same[Edited on August 12, 2009 at 6:22 PM. Reason : a]

its simplethey sell really really really cheap shit
8/12/2009 6:22:39 PM
So your customers don't have to turn left. DUH
8/12/2009 6:22:45 PM
But they weren't even on a major road like King's Highway. it was just a side street
8/12/2009 6:23:26 PM
In Atlantic Beach there's 2 Wings, a Blue Pacific (or something) and another one all within 100 feet of each other. Tourists from Ohio buy up all the AB magnets, t-shirts, and other made in China bullshit.
8/12/2009 6:25:27 PM
I, too, have pondered this before.
8/12/2009 6:25:45 PM
Here, I drew a high-def diagram in case there was still any confusion about what I meant by across the street:

I dunno, but I, for one, am pretty damn excited that they put a Wings in Gatlinburg, TN with the same AMAZING discounts on beachwear. So freaking convenient for me.
8/12/2009 6:31:36 PM
"wings" is what's wrong with america
8/12/2009 6:36:38 PM
^^^I like how you used the brush tool to give that some personality.

Where you headed? Natural Bridge and King's Highway Natural Bridge and King's Highway Come on with it Where you headed? Natural Bridge and King's Highway
8/12/2009 6:43:40 PM
see the thing is, is that they are all on the popular public beach corners. some one always for gets something when they go to the beach"hey i forgot my fucking sandals" i forgot my towel. well while they are in there they can get other cheap shit too, like a fucking hermet crab that will die before the trip is over. its the same with fast food, and gas stations
8/12/2009 6:49:22 PM
You obviously don't know what goes on in the dressing rooms. They make BANK on that shit.
8/12/2009 6:51:25 PM
lol
8/12/2009 6:52:18 PM
I should have put a couple lowriders with neon license plates on my diagram
8/12/2009 6:53:11 PM
I've never seen a Wings at a location I would consider to be prime real estate. They also sell incredibly cheap merchandise.
8/12/2009 6:54:19 PM
usually the bathing suit deal 3 for $10 is "select styles"
8/12/2009 6:54:20 PM
you know they don't sell the super classy confederate flag/corona bikinis for that cheap!
8/12/2009 6:55:21 PM
6^no shit...i tried on a top at Waves the other day...the seams weren't remotely even and it probably cost like $1.50 to stock...they were selling it for $35 ON SALE[Edited on August 12, 2009 at 6:56 PM. Reason : sadf]
8/12/2009 6:55:32 PM
These stores are just funneling money to terrorists.
8/12/2009 7:07:52 PM
