Alright, my wife and I recently celebrated our 1st anniversary. Of course there are customs and such that I'm oblivious to. I wanted to get her something, but I'm deployed and didn't want to shop over the internet (I wanted to actually see what I was buying). While she says she doesn't need anything, I still want to get her something.

From my understanding, clocks are supposed to be a first anniversary gift. Watches or something like a grandfather clock (we don't have a house yet though). I'm not really the kind of guy that conforms or is held to tradition...

Ideas?

The internet has a number of ideas for you.

I am not married so I can't provide you much beyond that list. I wouldn't know what the hell to do on my first anniversary, either.

If she's like me, she'd love a season pass for State basketball. In fact, screw her and get me that

LOL She didn't go to state, so I don't think that's something that she wants. In fact, she hates sports. She likes playing soccer though...

Get her a maternity dress. She'll be over it by the time you get home and it'll save you some money because she's eventually gonna buy that shit anyway.

if she's not materialistic (ie doesnt need a present, just the thought) then why not have flowers and such delivered to her? All women love flowers whether they expect u to get them for them or not.

other sentimental stuff is always FTW.. make her something creative that includes things you love about her.. if you're overseas make her a webpage, e-card, something personal that tells her that you love her and the things you love about her. most women love any sort of that stuff, plus you get a bit of a free pass if you're deployed

if you buy her a maternity dress, chances are she'll be so pissed that by the time you come back from being deployed she may fit in it, if you know what I mean.

my sister and her hubby put their money together to go on a trip and then bought each other small presents that fit with the trip. I think they went to Maryland for an Orioles game, and my sister got him a hat and I think he got her an Orioles shirt.

Hubby and I decided against a 1st year anniversary gift (this past May) in exchange for the kick-ass Vegas vacation we took in July.

We couldn't afford to do much for our honeymoon, so for our one year anniversary we took a trip to Puerto Rico. Especially if she is pregnant now, it might be an awesome time to take her somewhere and spend some time together. Even a weekend somewhere just the two of you. I would take that over anything you could buy her, especially a clock

don't buy her a clock. do people under the age of 70 really want anything like that for an anniversary present?

if she got you a watch for the anniversary, sounds like she wants to follow the tradition (or, you're hard to shop for and she didnt know what else to get)

i'd advise getting her a clock of some sort, but you know her best, you married her.

The tradition is Paper, Plastic, or Clock, so he has some choices.

I still say a gift certificate to a pregnancy spa (in my link above) or a babymoon would be the best idea. But, she's not my wife. I don't know anything about the chick.

I've never really understood the traditional anniversary present list. Seems like a cop out.

You should have an idea of what she'd like/wants/needs; clocks be damned.

I always liked the paper thing for the 1st anniversary. Because it can be so many things. A gift certificate like ^^ said, or plane tickets for the getaway weekend someone else suggested. I have a friend who's a concert pianist and her husband got her a framed piece of original sheet music. So, you can be creative and still stay within the paper, plastic, clocks thing like it appears she wants.

OK so she still liked the clock thing.

So I went with this $2500 watch from Tag Heur. It's two-tone with little diamond studs where the numbers are...

I don't have a pic, but it's on order and she should have it soon.

Well I'm actually kind of on the fence about that.

She used to complain about how guys would be really cheap with gifts about her, and also, she never skimps when it comes to presents for me.

I figured she would definitely give me the , but then the would follow. We'll see.

If she doesn't want it, I'll just take it back... no sweat.

Well it's not like I do either, but you know, I'm away, I missed our first anniversary, etc...

So I thought this would be something she could get really excited about.

And her being pregnant and all, I thought maybe we could do a one last "spoil each other" thing before there really is a baby here.

i think the watch was a smart move. like i said earlier, she seems into the traditional anniversary gifts. who cares how much you spent as long as you can afford it and she appreciates it. people act like its a major deal but engagement rings tend to cost about that, if not more and i see a watch as an investment. something classic you can wear forever. $2500 is a little rich for my blood but if it was a gift that could be afforded, i'd be excited about it.

I shudder just thinking about what you guys have to go through.

I've been married for 3 years, and I have yet to buy my wife a single gift for her birthday, Christmas, or anniversary. And she hasn't bought any for me.

Whenever we buy something substantial that we were going to buy anyway (like a computer, or when she gets a few nice things for <$50 at Target, etc.), I'll just turn and say "Happy Birthday/Anniversary/Christmas" (whatever is next). And she's totally cool with that.

Low-maintenance women FTW!

^ haha that's awesome.

Our birthdays are within a few days of each other, so we always just take a trip somewhere together in lieu of gifts. Last year he was gone in March so we just postponed it to June. If we get married in March we'll roll that into the deal as well

who actually pays attention to "marriage traditions" when buying gifts anyway

that's like saying "I don't really know the person I married all that well and I'm going to rely on others to choose her gift"

Just think about her for a while and focus on the things that make her happy. It will come to you.

just read thread. ignore me.

Boyfriend and I were both born within several weeks of Christmas, so the gift thing is only once a year. Last year I got catalytic converters for my car.

I actually think I'll go with a pair of XD9s (one full size, one compact) when I replace my current setup, but that wouldn't have made sense in a thread about clocks.

I'll always happily receive the gift of Glock though.
