I have called probably 20 shops this morning to try to get someone else to install some headers on my Tundra. I would do it myself, but I simply dont have the time to do it. The only place out of the 20 that does put them on is Raleigh Muffler and they wanted $605 labor and I provide the headers.
Does anyone else in this area do it that does not charge an arm and a leg? 8/17/2009 9:43:37 AM |

I have a manifold leak on my driver side (common on 03 Tundras) so I figure instead of replacing them with stock ($200 per side from Toyota) I would replace them with headers ($175 from SS Autochrome). 8/17/2009 9:58:29 AM |

That should be some straight up bolt on shit right? How much you willing to pay?

Do you have the gaskets too, or are you going to reuse the old ones? 8/17/2009 10:09:12 AM |
Brandon1 All American 1630 Posts user info edit post |
No I have new gaskets for the manifold and collectors.
It is bolt on, and I dont mind doing it, but from what I have read on my Toyota forum it takes about 3 hours and I simply dont have the time away from detailing to do it.
I have an offer from a mechanic right now to install them for $120.
Edit- Or I would be happy to barter a full detail on whatever you drive to my house. Thats usually worth $100-$200 I reckon.

agreed. i was gonna say i'd do it for maybe 200'ish. 120 isn't worth it, though. 8/17/2009 10:30:46 AM |

yeah, i bought a civic header from them in 2003 (when i knew no better), that was advertised as stainless... and whose pictures left me unable to visually see the weld discoloration - it was chrome.
ahah the labor-

let me guess, those are aftermarket gaskets too? If you care about longevity, either go with another OEM part (as counterintuitive as that may seem) or a high end aftermarket one. How long did your factory manifold last, 50-80k? Show me someone who has gotten 80k out of anything from SS autochrome. 8/17/2009 1:06:18 PM |

ew. ssautochrome. i threw up in my mouth a lil.
they come with cracks in the welds from the factory stock. 8/17/2009 1:12:53 PM |

I will admit my header has lasted... after having been jet-hot coated (that started peeling after 1.5 yrs)
fuck those pansy-ass gaskets they sell, though 8/17/2009 1:15:41 PM |

SSautochrome apparently have a bad rap. I have seen many members on that Tundra forum use and love them for 100k +. The stock manifolds lasted about 106k. Apparently in the tuner world they suck, but for what I need them for, they should be just fine and a great alternative to JBA ($605)
The gaskets are OEM and it's new hardware. 8/17/2009 2:53:48 PM |

put some hitack on the gaskets before the install. JBA imo is the best aftermarket header company for something like that 8/17/2009 4:17:02 PM |
Brandon1 All American 1630 Posts user info edit post |
Well obviously if money was no object, JBA's would be on the truck, but I cant swallow the $605 price. 8/17/2009 4:48:29 PM |

You'd better take that deal and hope you don't get crammed in the shitter. Or better yet, contact me for a deal better than the shops...but not quite THAT cheap at all. 8/18/2009 12:51:52 PM |

On my chevelle I had to lift the engine 1.5 feet out of the engine bay to remove the headers. This involved two extra people to snake them into position WHILE I lowered the engine back into place. And then I burned my hands on them every time I worked on the car from then on. 8/18/2009 5:17:31 PM |

I'd seriously consider doing it.
I tell you this: I don't see how it could be done even remotely easily without lifting the engine off the mounts. That shit is tight like a million dollar whore.
