half of the country is bipolar

we like to be diagnosed with popular/common disorders so we can make up excuses for not dealing with our own problems

ADD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, social anxiety disorder, and depression, are all just ways people are. Its like if you're a dick or an asshole all you have to do is get a diagnoses and an official name for it and people are supposed to act like its not your fault.

doctors just trying to push pills. I was "diagnosed" with depression for not being able to sleep and having pain in my back/legs. Never took the drugs and feel great now that I am sleeping better. The answer for pretty much everything is good diet and exercise.

no bipolar here

just:

severe ADHD
acute anxiety
non-otherwise specified anger issues (they took those off!)

i thought the ADHD was BS, but its been like totally confirmed by like 6 doctors and it SUCKS

I know there are people that need medication but not as many as are prescribed by a doctor. If you learn to deal with yourself by looking in instead of something from without you will be better off.

I don't have any disorders that I know of besides a semi-obscure sleeping disorder. But that's more physical than mental, anyway... And I have very convenient pills for it.

I have bipolar disorder...

Yes exercise does help, but when you are going through the serious depression stage of it, then you have no drive to do it, you don't wanna do anything, you wanna lay in bed all day, you wanna sit in your room and not do anything. You have no motivation to do anything good for yourself.

Then when you are going through your mania stage you feel like you are on top of the world, you will go and be very impulsive and spend money on things (get a new pet once a month). Stop going to classes because you feel like there is no reason to since you are going to be a millionaire one day anyway.

Then when it hits you again that you are broke and you're not going to be a millionaire you start getting those bad thoughts stuck in you head just like you get a song stuck in your head. And by the end of the day you have done nothing but think bad things about yourself and you've hit that depression again.

to be honest, i'm overall happier on meds, but i do miss a good old fashioned manic episode. nothing like some uncontrollable impulsiveness to make for some great stories. like, sometime during my sophomore year I hopped in my car and headed west. i wound up in bozeman, montana, with $200, a beat-up nissan, and the clothes on my back.

I used to date a girl who was fo' real bipolar (multiple suicide attempts, institutionalized twice, goes from sweetheat to banshee at the drop of a hat). 6 days of the week, she was either too depressed to get out of bed, or so wound up and jittery that she wanted to tear her skin off. Without hardcore personality-altering meds, she was completely unable to function in normal society.

I don't understand how docs can call her "bipolar" and give the same label to folks who are just a little moody. It's like lumping skin cancer with eczema.

I still have pots and pans with dents in them, from when she had a throwing fit.

There was a camper that came to Lutheridge that was very bipolar, like a mood change every 5 mins. There are different levels of it. My mood changes would be like a month of depression and a week of mania.
There are different levels to it. I was told mine was pretty severe because I went so long without it being diagnosed. Because apparently if you go too long with the symptoms your brain will just be accustomed to this and it can get worse and worse as the years go.

If you've got a mental illness, then you should be one of the first people to avoid making blanket statements that misrepresent things. If this is your personal experience, label it as such; not doing so is one of the (many) reasons that bipolar and other mental illnesses are misunderstood/not fully understood by the general population.

I've never thought my dx was BS, but I don't broadcast it, primarily because of all the BS diagnoses. If it were BS, I'd be milking it for all it's worth...like most with BS dx's.

Not always. But far too often? Yes. Or, in the case of neurontin (which has been used off-label for bipolar, MS, AND pain mgmt...yeah, good signs, I tell you), placebo patients fared better.

I would do that regardless of a manic episode

Part of why I avoid medication for the bipolar: yeah, I have to deal with the shitty stuff on my own, but then I'm able to experience and take advantage of the good parts.

On my meds I'm just a more realistic form of mania all the time. And when I'm feeling down it's no where as near as bad as it was.

The mania for me was nothing more than going broke and doing things that got me in trouble. Yeah my self esteem would be higher and I would just say fuck it when people insulted me, but I would also be super impulsive.
I'm still impulsive and my self esteem is much higher now, but it's more realistic because I'm being treated for it.
