Some of the people in here don't know what they want really or don't realize what is good about a vehicle they like. I can tell son.

Something realistic? I plan on owning an LSx powered vehicle after I graduate, period. That vehicle is going to get nasty no matter what it is. The preference for my starting point is this:

I'd like to start with the C6 Z06 simply because you're starting out with a 427ci (7.0L), 7000rpm, dry-sump LS7 that produces 505hp. The shit comes with titanium connecting rods from the factory. This engine, despite producing that much power, manages to avoid the gas guzzler tax as well. You also get a significantly better chassis than the base model C6 corvette because instead of steel, they used aluminum on this car. Lots of improvements have been made in areas that are difficult/impossible to improve on a base model Corvette (ie - how in the fuck do you change your chassis from steel to aluminum? ). It also sports a magnesium "engine cradle" and carbon fiber body panels in some places. It weighs 3130lbs, over 100lbs less than the base model Corvette. None of that weight is going to be easily removed from the base model for reasons we already covered.

The C6 Z06 is truly one hell of a car, I'm trying to get one ASAP son.

The next best thing would be a 2008 base model Corvette. This is the first year of the new gearbox, which is supposed to be excellent and it's the first year of the LS3 (6.2L), which can easily make Z06 levels of horsepower with some basic work.

The next best thing after that is a 2005-2007 base model Corvette. These come with an LS2 (6.0L) and the T-56 gearbox, but it's still an incredibly potent package.

Another option is the 2005-2006 Pontiac GTO, which is LS2 powered but significantly heavier than the base model C6 Corvette (3700lbs vs. 3250lbs). It is a much more useful vehicle though.

The newest Camaro is out even though it can come with an LS3, simply because it weighs about 200lbs more than the GTO (The new Camaro is seriously almost 4000lbs ). It also has less interior room in the back and is likely more poorly made.

Pretty much the only other car I'd consider at this point that doesn't have an LSx is the Terminator (A 2003-2004 Mustang Cobra). You'll be making high 300's at the wheels stock (390whp is apparently not out of the question at all for a stock Terminator). With some bolt on parts, a fully ported stock supercharger and tuning, you can get into the 500whp range. I'm almost certain that this is also the only Mustang that came with a T-56 transmission at the time and it has independent rear suspension, unlike non-cobra Mustangs (Including the newer generations!).

You're telling me something I just didn't know. I really had no idea that you could build an LS2 to destroy the Z06.

Did you know you could build an LT1 "to destroy a C6 Z06" for a lot less money? Did you know you can build a 2JZ "to destroy a C6 Z06" for a lot less money?

Hell, if you're going to fuck with it that much, why even start with an LS2? Just buy an LSX block from the beginning. I mean, this argument you're putting forth is so unusual to me. Perhaps you thought I had no clue or something? I don't get it.

What the fuck is your point man? You don't get that chassis with the other models. With the C5 Z06, I don't see a point. With the C6, the differences are ridiculous. But don't come in here telling me how you can make more power than a stock LS7 with a built LS2 because that adds NOTHING to this conversation. You're looking at nothing but straight line speed anyway.

I'm considering the whole package. You know, the brakes, the chassis, the fact that an LS7 has dry sump lubrication from the factory (Something the LS1/6/2/3 engines do not have), etc?

Then we look at the part where I already have a bike that can easily run mid 9's in the 150's with a decent rider and it is a fucking $6k bike. I mean, that bike costs less than an LS3 crate motor and it will absolutely DESTROY the Z06 in terms of straight line acceleration. Again though, it adds nothing to the conversation.

God dammit don't buy that new Camaro, they are boats man. The 2005-2006 GTO is better value I think and you'll still get your LS engine son. You'll have more interior room with the GTO, the exterior dimensions will actually be smaller (Easier to park!), your car will weigh 200lbs less (This means better handling, braking, acceleration, fuel economy and reduced tire wear) and your car will look a lot better than a Camaro. It should also gather a lot less attention than a brand new LS powered Camaro, which is good when your car is actually quick.

If you were actually considering a V6 Camaro at any point in time, it's time to re-evaluate your understanding of reality. The only redeeming quality about the new Camaro is the fact that you can order one with an LS3. The new SS is apparently a fun car to drive and it has a better trunk than the GTO from my understanding.

If you don't mind the car being a boat, why not get a G8 GXP? I don't suggest the GT or the base model as much because of the engine options, but the G8 GXP would be a great car and would make much more use of all of that extra weight than the Camaro will IMO.

Check out this worthless C6 Z06 with an upgraded cam and a set of upgraded heads (These items were likely overpriced because they're from Lingenfelter, but whatever, the end result is still quality):

My friend went and bought an ex-police Caprice in high school. Never again son.

Not exactly. I said it is a car I'm considering, but mostly because of the fact that I'd still get the engine I want while having a more usable car. The ideal situation is a C6 Z06 because it is the lightest possible configuration I can find that houses a Gen IV LS motor from the factory. It also has the most performance oriented chassis and is pretty much the best overall package available to wrap around an LS engine when you consider the aluminum chassis, some carbon fiber body panels, a lower mounted engine that is mounted using a lightweight magnesium cradle, dry sump lubrication, excellent brakes, a wide body that accommodates wider wheels than the base model, etc. I'd also prefer a 2008 Z06 since then I'd get the better gearbox with it as well. All of those things are things that would be way too expensive to bother to do to a base model corvette. They would also be VERY time consuming tasks, particularly if you want to go from a steel chassis to an aluminum one!

Btw, this is why I love the C6 Z06. You get to start out with that many advantages over the stock Corvette. You still have all of this potential, should you wish to take the car further in terms of power, but you're starting out with something that is already quite capable and very well thought out. Unlike the C5 Z06, the C6 truly is a completely different animal and you can't just buy a base model and quickly get it to Z06 levels of performance. You can make a base model C6 accelerate like a stock Z06 rather easily I guess, but you're still driving a heavier vehicle with worse brakes, a higher center of gravity, etc. The LS6 isn't really a big deal, as evidenced by the difference in price between an LS1 and LS6. It has slightly stiffer valve springs, lighter exhaust valves and a slightly more aggressive cam IIRC and that's pretty much it. All of that shit gets thrown away when you get a decent set of upgraded heads and a cam anyway, since should really be converting to dual valve springs and larger valves when you get a set of ported heads. The FRC body style was even available in non-Z06 form as many of you know and as a result, if you planned on modifying your car there is no real advantage to having a C5 Z06.

The GTO is way down the list, but if for some reason I need a more practical car, it's definitely something I'd consider. They cannot fit very wide tires from the factory btw. Nowhere near the width that a C6 Z06 can run. In fact, they're almost maxxed out the way they come from my understanding (235's?), which is a big deal when you're trying to modify an LS motor and actually put that power to the pavement.
