anyone that knows this game will tell you it's awesome but has anyone had any luck getting it to work on vista or xp? (its a ms dos program I believe)

I got the program to load but the game always freezes at the first move

Come on dude, its been like 3 years since Vista came out. Any combination of "dos", "vista", and "game" on Google will give you about a billion different pages talking about these problems and the solution (see llama's post). Stop being a lazy ass and google shit.

hmm now I think it's actually a really early windows game and now I keep reading it just might not be compatible with vista

There are several different versions of Battle Chess according to the DOS Memories project. The one I recall is from Interplay's 10th Anniversary CD. That version should work under DosBox.
