I think knot-tying on shoes must be a thing that sticks around because of convention, rather than any actual advantage. In other words, because you don't want to look retarded.

I think a hook similar to the ones you lace around at the top of a boot, and a fixed loop at the end of the strings that you could hook on it would work nicely. I had some welding boots that kept getting the laces burnt up, so i replaced them with light steel cable, obviously you cant tie that so I looped it with a U-bolt and hooked it over the top hook of the boot when i put them on, it worked great. I don't see why the same principal wouldn't work with normal shoe laces. The end loop could even be rigid, plastic or metal, and fit into a flat groove in the hook to make it less able to twist the hook back and come out.

There is a shoe that has a knob on the back of it that you twist and it tightens up the shoe...it's pretty cool.http://www.thenorthface.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=10897&storeId=207&catalogId=10201&langId=-1&from=subCat&parent_category_rn=11706&variationId=8Q9[Edited on August 23, 2009 at 9:29 AM.
