anybody done it or know anyone that has lived on a boat?

I been thinkin, i love being at the beach, and houses are so expensive there as it is, so if i'm gonna throw down $200k on a house (even more $texas at the beach obv) why not just get a sweet boat and live on that? They got em with bedrooms, showers, kitchens, satellite tv....it'd be perfect. Plus how awesome would you be to ur friends and chicks you meet "ya i live on a boat".....itd be great

can i get some pros/cons here?

tia

by the time you add up docking fees, power, waste removal, etc. it comes out to the same as a house payment

cost of the boat + slip rental + shore power + shore water

you could def rent a condo or apt at the beach for the cost associated with owning a boat

well see thats what im sayin, if after all that crap it comes out to be the same cost as living in a house (i mean gees whats a house at kure beach in wilm run u now? like 500k min?) you'd be making the same payments as u would on a house, but you have a freakin sweet ass boat....seems like an easy decision to me.

and when shitty weather comes around, well u've probably made so many friends cause u own a sweet boat, u can just crash with them for the night!

I would imagine homeowners insurance on something like that is god-aweful, but I'm sure it would be nice to do for a while....

Exactly! With a boat, you'll have an endless stream of women and friends. You could be mean as hell and you'd be the most popular guy around!!!

it's a bit different being on a cruise ship vs being on a 20 foot houseboat

ya cruise ship is different, but back in 03 i was on a ~60 footer for a week and it was rocky every day and i loved it

seasick isn't the issue at all here, its whether or not

a.) could i afford it for ~roughly the same as purchasing a home near the beach

b.) how many chicks could i get?

lucy gets first dibs btw

a) Yes, but it depends on the type of boat you want compared to the exact house you want
b) Probably two or more chicks at the same time--I'll bring my hot friends over to party

and you'll have a house that you can sell. you won't have a damn thing to show for all those dock fees.

it's pretty much just the old renting vs. owning argument

my dad had a 48' wooden yacht back when I was in high school. It was basically a floating apartment that I lived in 90% of the year. Had a kitchen, three bedrooms (5 bunks/beds total) and two bathrooms. It was a pain in the ass cause it was a wooden boat and would leak from time to time when it rained, but if you got a newer fiberglass boat you'd probably be fine.

you are right about having all sorts of friends when you live on a boat, I dont think I stayed more than a couple nights by myself on that boat. You'd be really surprised how many people live on boats, its like a totally different culture with a bunch of generally very happy people who smoke lots of weed

You can anchor in the inlet at Beaufort for free. They have tried to put a permit/fee system in place in the past, but for now it's free. While I'd like to agree with you, all those sailboats that have been out there all summer disagree.

Something tells me you could get back to basics and the power fees would be next to null. I'm sure there are economical waste removal means if you search it out.

Party! Pick me up in Port Canaveral at noon on Friday. I'll bring a group of eight of my closest girlfriends, if you know what I mean.

And man has his priorities in line.

lol, if you think house repairs are expensive wait until your boat breaks something.

I had friends that lived on a houseboat. For the same cash I'd much rather rent an apartment with several times more space. And boats are NOT near the beach. Beach is shallow, boats need deep water. So you'll still have to drive to the beach. Waterfront condo FTW over a boat.

ok starting to look like the two biggest cons here are

a. no equity

b. depreciation

vs the top pros

a. you are now the coolest amongst ur friends

b. women love u

seriously this is a tough decision

Depreciation works both ways though.

As a seller it sucks if you bought a boat for $50k and now it's worth $20k.
As a buyer it means you can get a boat for $20k as long as you don't mind dealing with it having a little age.

Just be the guy who pays $20k and sells it for $15k when you're done with it and it's not that big of a deal.

A waterfront condo is going to run you $200k+ for a 1 BR just about anywhere on the NC coast.
I mean, you can search it out and find some dump that used to be a motel room for $160k I guess; but you get what I mean.
It's a lot of loot by comparison.

Cheaper to buy fish than pay for gas to take a houseboat out where there might be fish.

i know a guy who lives on a houseboat in Morehead...He's lived there for 10+ years and loves it. He said it's not terribly expensive, but I seem to recall him saying his slip agreement was grandfathered in from previous owners or something.
