anybody done it or know anyone that has lived on a boat?I been thinkin, i love being at the beach, and houses are so expensive there as it is, so if i'm gonna throw down $200k on a house (even more $texas at the beach obv) why not just get a sweet boat and live on that? They got em with bedrooms, showers, kitchens, satellite tv....it'd be perfect. Plus how awesome would you be to ur friends and chicks you meet "ya i live on a boat".....itd be greatcan i get some pros/cons here?tia

8/24/2009 12:56:00 PM
it's not a cheap as you would thinkand it would suck when the weather is bad
8/24/2009 12:56:37 PM
Talk to Noen.
8/24/2009 12:57:24 PM
by the time you add up docking fees, power, waste removal, etc. it comes out to the same as a house payment
8/24/2009 12:57:45 PM
^ that was going to be my next comment
8/24/2009 12:58:26 PM
dare i say, it's a wash?
8/24/2009 12:58:27 PM
But you would meet chicks like WHOA!
8/24/2009 12:58:28 PM
cost of the boat + slip rental + shore power + shore wateryou could def rent a condo or apt at the beach for the cost associated with owning a boat
8/24/2009 12:58:31 PM
hope you dont get sea sick
8/24/2009 12:59:51 PM
well see thats what im sayin, if after all that crap it comes out to be the same cost as living in a house (i mean gees whats a house at kure beach in wilm run u now? like 500k min?) you'd be making the same payments as u would on a house, but you have a freakin sweet ass boat....seems like an easy decision to me.and when shitty weather comes around, well u've probably made so many friends cause u own a sweet boat, u can just crash with them for the night!
8/24/2009 1:00:29 PM
I would imagine homeowners insurance on something like that is god-aweful, but I'm sure it would be nice to do for a while....
8/24/2009 1:00:48 PM
lol i just went on a 3 week cruise earlier this year defiinitely dont get seasick. I love the waves
8/24/2009 1:01:26 PM
Exactly! With a boat, you'll have an endless stream of women and friends. You could be mean as hell and you'd be the most popular guy around!!!
8/24/2009 1:01:49 PM
it's a bit different being on a cruise ship vs being on a 20 foot houseboat
8/24/2009 1:01:53 PM
can you say: "Swamp Ass"
8/24/2009 1:01:54 PM

8/24/2009 1:02:16 PM
ya cruise ship is different, but back in 03 i was on a ~60 footer for a week and it was rocky every day and i loved itseasick isn't the issue at all here, its whether or nota.) could i afford it for ~roughly the same as purchasing a home near the beachb.) how many chicks could i get? lucy gets first dibs btw
8/24/2009 1:05:28 PM
a) Yes, but it depends on the type of boat you want compared to the exact house you wantb) Probably two or more chicks at the same time--I'll bring my hot friends over to party
8/24/2009 1:06:44 PM
8/24/2009 1:07:24 PM
oh ya that whole equity thing.....meh.2 chicks at the same time >>>>>> long term capital gains
8/24/2009 1:08:34 PM
lucy best thing is u dont even have to come to NC.....im on a boat my home comes to u.
8/24/2009 1:09:09 PM

my dad had a 48' wooden yacht back when I was in high school. It was basically a floating apartment that I lived in 90% of the year. Had a kitchen, three bedrooms (5 bunks/beds total) and two bathrooms. It was a pain in the ass cause it was a wooden boat and would leak from time to time when it rained, but if you got a newer fiberglass boat you'd probably be fine.you are right about having all sorts of friends when you live on a boat, I dont think I stayed more than a couple nights by myself on that boat. You'd be really surprised how many people live on boats, its like a totally different culture with a bunch of generally very happy people who smoke lots of weed[Edited on August 24, 2009 at 1:13 PM. saw a sweet ass house boat on lake jordan the other weekendabout a 50 footer, now that would be moneythe other thing is house boats arent built for being on the oceanneed a captain?
8/24/2009 1:14:09 PM
Party! Pick me up in Port Canaveral at noon on Friday. I'll bring a group of eight of my closest girlfriends, if you know what I mean. And man has his priorities in line.

8/24/2009 1:15:30 PM
a house will appreciate and a boat depreciates drastically!!
8/24/2009 1:15:52 PM
lol, if you think house repairs are expensive wait until your boat breaks something. I had friends that lived on a houseboat. For the same cash I'd much rather rent an apartment with several times more space. And boats are NOT near the beach. Beach is shallow, boats need deep water. So you'll still have to drive to the beach. Waterfront condo FTW over a boat.
8/24/2009 1:18:02 PM
ok starting to look like the two biggest cons here area. no equityb. depreciationvs the top prosa. you are now the coolest amongst ur friendsb. women love useriously this is a tough decision
8/24/2009 1:18:32 PM
boats are about as "waterfront" as you can get
8/24/2009 1:19:00 PM
But not beachfront!
8/24/2009 1:19:51 PM
Pro: You don't have to go grocery shopping because fish swim directly to your house!
8/24/2009 1:20:14 PM
8/24/2009 1:20:51 PM
Yeah, but vegetables and other things necessary don't.
8/24/2009 1:21:07 PM
Gotta be pretty damn handy if you want a fixer upper boat.

^^^SEAWEED DURi know a guy who drove down to south carolina to pick up and fix a broken down 22 foot sailboat, sailed it back up to nc, kept it for a year and then sold it for 5k more than he paid for it[Edited on August 24, 2009 at 1:23 PM. Reason : .]
8/24/2009 1:22:26 PM
omg the fish would be jumping right into my frying pan!oh ya veggies.....well if im docked i can make a quick grocery run
8/24/2009 1:22:31 PM
Ok, well beer doesn't swim up to your boat either.
8/24/2009 1:22:32 PM
Cheaper to buy fish than pay for gas to take a houseboat out where there might be fish.
8/24/2009 1:22:37 PM
i know a guy who lives on a houseboat in Morehead...He's lived there for 10+ years and loves it. He said it's not terribly expensive, but I seem to recall him saying his slip agreement was grandfathered in from previous owners or something.
