I'm having a tough time deciding between a few different used cars. I'm considering the following: '98 or '99 Volvo S70 sedan 3rd gen. Toyota 4runner Mid to late '90s Lexus LS400 Mid to late '90s Toyota Camry or Avalon
I want something that won't require a whole lot of maintenance over the next several years, which seems to be the case for Toyotas and '90s Lexuses. I'm not sure about Volvos for reliability... they get mostly good reviews but the '89 740 I had several years ago needed minor things done practically every couple of months. 8/25/2009 12:24:03 PM |

You can't go too wrong with a Camry or a 4Runner.
The others have too much luxury bullshit that will break and not be worth fixing until the car has like 50 problems and you hate it. 8/25/2009 12:54:16 PM |

Corollas are good cars but they're a little small. I wouldn't want to be in an accident in a Corolla, they probably get crushed like soda cans. Volvos are big on safety, but again, reliability is an issue with them. 8/25/2009 1:06:22 PM |

I love those old L400s and their springy seats. A family of friend of mine has 240k+ miles on his. 8/25/2009 1:23:28 PM |

It's my opinion that way too many people are stuck on this whole safety thing and end up getting bigger and bigger cars and SUVs. It's a vicious cycle. It's stupid. If people actually drove like they had sense and were courteous and quit paying more attention to their iPods, cell phones, GPSs and the like than to their actual physical driving, then we wouldn't have these issues (or nearly as often).
Drive on the offensive and take steps to NOT put yourself in harm's way. Drive defensively to avoid being hit by the mindless fucktards around you. And you'll likely be just fine, whether it be in a Corolla (which is still a very safe car; only marginally less so than a Camry if at all) or in a vault with wheels.
Of course, if the act of driving and good road habits and skills is not your primary concern while behind the wheel, maybe you'd better go ahead and opt for a Hummer.8/25/2009 1:46:49 PM |

Or something cheap and disposable since you'll probably destroy it in a wreck anyways... 8/25/2009 1:51:37 PM |

I am a safe and responsible driver. I keep a watchful eye out for anything that could pose a hazard, which has kept me out of a lot of potential accidents. However, there's only so much you can do to avoid unsafe drivers, which is why I desire a safe car.

Mostly because they have positive reviews and are within my price range, plus they are models that have aged well appearance-wise.
Each model sends a different message to the world: 4-runner: I'm fun and outdoorsy, but have psychological issues that compel me to drive a much larger vehicle than I really need. Camry: I'm boring and average, but I don't feel like I have something to prove. Volvo: I'm a boring safety wuss but I make a good living and I appreciate functional European design. '90s Lexus: I like attractive, dependable luxury cars but can't afford one from this decade.8/25/2009 2:22:36 PM |

Well, honestly an S70 T5 5-speed, should you actually manage to locate one, is going to be the quickest car on that list and it would probably be my choice if I were limited to the options given.
That turbocharged 5 cylinder sounds really good too btw. ] 8/25/2009 2:27:35 PM |

^I'm not too concerned about a zippy car, though. My '89 Volvo took an eternity to get up to 45 but I didn't care.
I also forgot to mention that my wife currently has an '01 4runner. So perhaps having two would just be silly. 8/25/2009 2:30:13 PM |

My absolute maximum budget, including taxes and fees, is 6 grand. It doesn't sound like much, but I have found quite a few of the aforementioned models in excellent condition for under 6K. Basically I want reliable, reasonably safe, and attractive and respectable-looking. 8/25/2009 3:02:41 PM |

I admire your conservative outlook and low threshold for satisfaction, but am simultaneously made aware of the fact that that necessarily implies that I now know I am vain and insecure and that my passion for performance is little more than an empty game I am playing by myself without an audience to cheer me on. And so I boo you. BOOOO! BOO THREAD! 8/26/2009 10:51:51 PM |
