Overrated BIG TIME. I had one at work the whole time I was there. It's a nice chair, but it didn't really do anything more for my back/posture than a $100 Viking faux leather chair I've had at home for years.

I'll be getting reimbursed for it through my job though, so I'm not completely sad. I'll have my moneyback soon enough I hope, haha.

I wonder what my manager's gonna have to say about this

Then it probably wasn't setup properly, or you have a 50% percentile stature that actually fits mass-manufactured chairs.

I didn't realize they still made the Aeron series. The Embody series basically replaced the Aeron as the high end, and the Celle and Mirra are both newer ergonomic chairs from Herman Miller.

we've got the mirra chairs at work.

When we first got them, several people on my team hated them. Once I showed them how to set it up, everyone pretty much loved them.

but I don't love 'em enough to buy one for home. Maybe one day if I get laid off, I'll sneak one out of the building.

I'm not surprised you're know-it all ass was the one to make that comment.

Over 6 years I tried MANY MANY MANY different positions. For years I started off tweaking everything about the chair. When nothing seemed to really give me that "ah hah, this feels nice" moment, I started playing around with platforms for my feet, under desk trays for my keyboard/mouse, and nothing ever really felt fantastic. My general posture is decent, I can sit upright and firm for an hour or so before needing a break.

Ultimately, what ended up being the most comfortable was an extremely laid back position with a platform for my feet and a keyboard tray. My desk (thus, my monitors) was still higher than I liked, but overall I got by.

My coworker has a Mirra, and I thought it was nice, but not completely impressed.

We'll see how the Aeron is...I can send it back if I dont like it. And definitely didnt pay retail for it.

Haha, I'd hate to actually have to pay for everything I ordered today.

I just took a new position and told my manager I needed a few things. She was 100% in agreement and told me to get whatever I needed. Today I bought:

1) Aeron chair
2) Adobe CS4 Premium
3) Articulate Studio

thats what this thread is about??

my job ordered 15 of these straight up for us (none of that reimbursement crud), and not many people like em....hell we only spend about 2 hours a day at most sitting at the desk

i use it only because my previous chair was a piece of shit, i do like whatever the chair is made out of though its like your sittin on strings

the damn thing is too customizable IMO..i actually dont feel like it was a wise investment because we dont use em all that much

Hey dickbag, I ran a furniture company for a year and a half. We did a TON of work on anthropometrics and ergonomics for our chairs. Sorry chief.

Any Herman Miller Ergo chair needs to be setup by a professional for the user. It's a shame that almost never happens now, because they've just become the "nice office chair" and not many people have a clue how to set them up.

Instructions - Kinematics - Anthropometrics

Bet you didn't know the Aeron comes in 3 sizes (as do most of their ergo chairs). Each of which only fits certain proportions, and even with that they only fit ~90% of people.

People don't like the Aeron because the instructions are almost never kept, the wrong size is very commonly ordered, and no one EVER sets them up properly themselves because we are all used to the super shitty Staples/Officemax chairs.

All that said, sitting down for more than an hour or so at a time is not good, no matter what the chair is. I finally got a standing desk and stool, and it's been amazing.

i also feel that these are overrated...the majority of day is spent at my desk these days, and i'm using an aeron (they didn't buy it for me, specifically, it just happened to be here when i got my current job)...i don't get what the big deal is

it's comfortable, yes, but no more or less so than any other chair i've spent hours at a time sitting in

the only thing that's awesome is the mesh...and you can get that from a cheap knockoff...don't get me wrong, if someone were buying me one, i'd take it and be stoked...but i'd certainly never waste my own money on one...it's all just hype

^ Come on, you know full well Neon is the god damned authority about this. WHAT HE SAYS IS FACT, NOT OPINION, OK?

Nevermind me tweaking this chair probably once a month for nearly 6 years. Nevermind me READING the instructions for all the settings and googling for posture tips and things to do. Nope. Neon said it. It must be fact.

I'm fairly certain if I could have a combo of sitting and standing during the day I'd use it and my joints would thank me for it.

Comfortable chairs. I needed a new chair at my last job b/c the one at my desk when I started was broken, so they said "ok we'll get you a chair" and I discovered an aeron at my desk a few days later. I was rather at the fact that a state institution would buy me a $texas chair unbidden, but I wasn't going to argue. I was happy with it, definitely ergonomic, comfy however long I sat, the mesh keeps you cool, and it's a nice looking piece of equipment (though the chrome/polished accent ones look better, this one was matte black). Worth how much they charge for them? Debatable.

At the position before that one, we were given the opportunity to go to an office furniture showroom and pick out new chairs (within reason) and I chose an Allsteel Sum high-back. At least IMO that one was quite a bit more comfortable than the aeron, though it didn't have the mesh.

Mine was not professionally set up, but I did read the instructions at least. I was aware of the sizes; mine was a medium which seemed to work just fine for me being a somewhat average-sized male (5'10"/215). Again, someone just estimated that, but their estimation seemed to work.

I really wanted one, then I used it for about a week on a work trip. Not worth it. It did not help me comfortably sit with good posture. It helped me sit with bad posture comfortably for a while, but that's not what I wanted.

I love how everyone is an expert on the internets.

And how expensive do you guys think they are? You can get an Aeron as an institution for under $300 bucks. That isn't much more than a decent normal office chair. Even buying one from a retailer is like $350-400.

And for everyone saying how "not that good" they are, BusinessWeek, the IDSA, and MoMA would disagree. Not to mention the decades of research that the chair, and all of Herman Miller's other ergonomic chairs are based on. It really does give me a chuckle though that so many of the people on this site completely ignore the facts when I have some experience in a subject area.

You mean the fact where I said 1/10 people WONT FIT? Or when I said that sitting in ANY chair for more than an hour or so at a time is not good for your body? I love how easily you selectively ignore my points.

Quote :
"i also feel that these are overrated...the majority of day is spent at my desk these days...it's all just hype"

You can feel whatever you want, but the research is there. Jesus they even CITE THE FUCKING PAPERS IN THE PRESS MATERIAL. It's not some marketing bullshit, it is real science. Which, if you'd read the damn links I posted, means that ITS HARD TO MAKE A CHAIR TO FIT EVERYONE.

Let's say this one more time for Fail and Quag: Spending a majority of your day in ANY seated position is going to have longterm negative effects.

the popliteal length of the aeron chair is too long for me (i am only 5'2"). we tested high end office chairs in the ergonomics lab i worked in so we had 10 or 12 in the lab we used fairly often. my FAVORITE was a hayworth chair. it was amazing. hope you enjoy your aeron chair though

a large majority of back and neck problems can be prevented by just having good posture, both standing and sitting.

and good posture is free

honestly everyone is an expert on the internets with google being a click away..

but i think it's often obvious when somebody is a google expert, and when someone actually has some experience with/ actual knowledge of a subject, which is the case here.
