i do this all the freaking time. best buy is the usual victim. if the price difference between local and online+shipping is less than about $3.50, i'll often keep the local product.

who else does this?

[Edited on August 27, 2009 at 11:22 AM. Reason : $3.50 is the far end of the spectrum though. usually it's $10+]

I did it with a tv

Got some shitty ass best buy brand proscan (come on slave, you're better than that) and it sucked

Returned it for a philips, which was good, but double the price

then I knocked it off the shelf and it broke, so I said it came like that, but they were out, so I got a vizio

oh i know how it feels. people used to do this all the time when i ran bookstores

edit...the efficiencies provided by internet retail obviously cause problems for brick and mortar. there's value in being able to try something before you commit to buying something online, but brick and mortar places have difficulty monetizing that. there's always restock fees, but most of the time you'll just end up pissing off more legit customers than the money you'll save with the "renters." as a business owner, i had to accept this fact as a cost of doing business.

^^

dude, I SCOUR the internet reading up on reviews before I make a serious purchase

there is no way I could evaluate that shit on my own

that's how I bought my Samsung LCD TV

I found what I thought was the optimum between price and performance (performance always wins out and you end up spending a couple of hundred more than you planned... but that's because I have a Y chromosome)

and I bought it online on the cheap

Mine was just a tertiary TV tho

I already have 2 in the living room, this is just a 3d one whenever there's 3 games on at once, or whenever there's 2 games and a movie

So its not that important

me too, but sometimes internet reviews just won't cut it. for example, online reviews won't be able to tell me if a certain wifi adapter will get a decent signal to my router from upstairs. gotta try it first. so i spent $80 at best buy, but now that i know it will work ok, i'm gonna buy it for $20 on newegg. -shrug-
