I mean, they might not be, but that has nothing to do with this

These types of stories always amaze me. How could someone not hear her scream/try to escape, or notice something strange about the people who did this?

So news companies can't do simple arithmetic? And yes, stories like this always baffle me. She was kidnapped and then gave birth to two kids and was living with her kidnapper. Did she never get a chance to escape in 18 years, or alert or call someone?I guess we can chalk it to another case of Stockholm Syndrome.

^The sad part is that if she has been locked up for that long without going out in public then she has the education of an 11 year old at age 29. And how did they manage to get the 2 daughters in the system? Maybe they just locked them up too? I guess they could have said they found them on the side of the road and know nothing about them.[Edited on August 27, 2009 at 8:56 PM. Reason : .]

yeah it is sad, her life is destroyed... hopefully her daughters can be saved and integrated into soceity and educated.saw her pic... she looks 39, not 29...

^Maybe the kidnappers were really smart and home schooled her. I hope so.

here is a bizarre but expected new twist:http://edition.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/08/31/california.missing.girl/index.htmlthe girl/woman was living a normal life with her daughters and the captor and they helped out at the captor's printing business and even attended bday parties.so they could have escaped anytime.

so you don't believe that the trama and other actions inflicted did nothing to influence the young woman's response over time?

I saw somewhere a tv show about this. How if you capture a child young enough, you can scare them so they don't leave right away. Sometimes, as long as the captor cares for the child, they won't leave even if given the opportunity. I mean, the necessities are provided. And most children can't "plan" out how they'll escape. Sure some will probably try and maybe even be successful. But you've got to put yourself in their place, not knowing what you know now. It's hard to be in their place. If the captor says, "I killed your parents, you're living with me now..." Are you really going to testify against that? Sure most captors abuse their victims. For a child, I'm sure that's enough to be scared of. And I'm sure after years of abuse and such, one becomes acustomed to the environment to the point where it's "tollerable", despite how poor it may be.I remember one specific case where this boy was kidnapped by this old man. It was in reader's digest iirc. He said how he lived in a small apartment with this man, and how he got whatever he wanted (playstation, junk food, w/e) as long as he followed curfew. The man would sexually abuse him now and then, but otherwise, he was a happy kid. He said he missed his parents and wanted to go home to them, but he was afraid to leave because of the consequences. But he always hoped they would find him somehow.[Edited on August 31, 2009 at 3:13 PM. Reason : .]
