It's called a "glory" and was one of the coolest things I've seen in nature We were flying over Greenland and I looked out my window and saw it.. I thought it was just something the window was doing at first, but it was real! I can't upload my picture right now but I will later... here is a picture that looks similar to mine:

Quote :
"It was a rare thing in those days to see a glory. Nowadays we have more frequent opportunities - and we do not have to get up at the crack of dawn to do so. A glory can be seen when an airplane flies in sunlight above a layer of cloud consisting of water droplets - as distinct from the much colder and higher clouds composed of ice particles. It is similar to the corona often seen around the moon - a series of concentric coloured rings - but instead of being centred around the moon, the glory appears around the shadow of the aircraft projected on to the layer of cloud below. "

i saw something close to it on the ground once, it was probably about a 270° arc and the best i had seen before that was like 150° at most.

^3 Yes, let me not trust multiple scientific websites with information regarding prisms and light refraction/reflection and all that jazz... I'll just go ahead and trust whatever the fuck you say, ok?

Bitch, please. Go troll somewhere else and stop trying to ride my nuts over a natural phenomenon otherwise known as a glory

[Edited on August 31, 2009 at 9:28 PM. Reason : MAMBA IS THE ALL KNOWING CUNT UP IN HUR]

By the way, smart ass... a 22 degree halo is around the fucking sun. The thing I experienced happens around the shadow of an airplane

you already admitted you know nothing. every rainbow is circular when the ground isn't in the way. glory is not even a scientific term.

Quote :
"I've seen a double one before"

every rainbow is a "double one" (secondary and primary).

I'll be happy to clear up your misconceptions all day. Just don't ever act like you know what you're talking about because you've saw it on google again. k?

I understand that you're unhappy with your self and therefore try to rain on others' parades by being a total cunt to them, but it's not gonna fly here.

See http://www.atoptics.co.uk/droplets/glorair.htm for further clarification that glories in fact due exist.

Furthermore, I would like to point out the fact that you said:

Quote :
"every rainbow is circular when the ground isn't in the way. glory is not even a scientific term. "

HOWEVER... what you pointed out that FailBoat showed a picture of, is in fact, not a "rainbow." Therefore, I guess you don't know shit about rainbows either?

I pray that your students get a better teacher than you.

I think it's "supernumerary" and it's usually too faint to see.
