we have 3-4 DJs who regularly spin.

he just promotes 10x harder than any of em.

(that and he has probably 10x more fans/followers than any relatively affordable DJ around)

(and people like him a lot more than any other DJ who plays there)

he came on after me at a party once

he cut off the end of an animal collective song to play diddy

everyone stopped dancing and looked at him

not a bad guy, though

who booked him at a venue where the prior DJ was playing animal collective?

and why was anyone dancing to animal collective? is this one of those "I'm more in tune than you because I can dance to something with no musical structure or integrity" things?

forgive me, I love about 80% of the noise pop/indie humped stuff that's come out in the past 3-4 years, but AC has to be the most overrated amalgamation of sounds I've ever heard since Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!

^all the time

no, i take that back. some of their stuff i can see as danceable. but seriously, most overrated "under the radar" band in years.

it was a party

he was friends with one host

i was friends with another

we were using his shit so he went on after

i had another party to do later in the night, which is to say i have no idea what the reaction was like to the rest of his set, but i figure he adjusted just fine

and if you can't dance to the back half of "my girls" you've got problems

AC is an acquired taste

but lots of people don't think maggot brain is a brilliant album, so whatev...there's no accounting for taste

I spent 19-24 giving every attempt at TRYING to like anything that 88.1 played. I tried just as hard as any bearded, painted-on-denim kid with unnecessary glasses did, and still couldn't get Animal Collective. It's just boring. If most folks would take off their cardigans, and really apply their cognitive powers to align with their ears, they'd most likely find the same. Sure, I'm a musical snob, but not in so much that I still subscribe to just anything KNC plays. I mean, really, remember CYHSY? Don't you remember liking them? Do you now sit and think, "my god. that was actually really bad." What an obtuse, ill thought out attempt to re-create Television. Not everything that bleeps and bloops and has violins is good.

I'm kinda on the same wave now with Ra Ra Riot. After a year of really, really giving it a go, I realize it's just Helio Sequence with some violins. Debate that. And that Discovery LP? One tube of hair gel short of boy band. Arguably, the only difference is the fashion.

Well, actually, if you have no regard for funk, you aren't going to like Maggot Brain. Plain as that. I happen to think Jacksonville City Nights is genius. And Low Level Owl. But I know several people who scoff at the thought of them. Not because they don't think it's necessarily music, but because it just isn't their cup of tea. there are several things in the realm of AC that I like, and they just don't get me there.

People are obsessed with keyboards and blippy dance music. I like it when I'm in the mood, but it's the last thing I'll sit down and listen to on my own.

I've encountered problems with this obsession at JP. I swear to god, you tell people at JP that it's possible to dance to King Khan and they look at you like you're insane. If there's not a noodly keyboard line and a drum machine beat, they can't figure out what to do.

With all that said, I honestly think AC make interesting records. They're not always good, but there are at least a couple of quality tracks on all of their records, particularly MPP and Sung Tongs.

I guess I don't understand a breathing human being who doesn't have regard for funk. And I fucking love JCN.

precisely why i don't go to JP anymore. go once, you've seen what it is and will always be. (i've been several times)

pretense, no variance socially. I swear, the last time i was there, I heard a discussion of which Pollack piece is the best. I shit you not. You can't get more formulaic than that. There's probably a Kerouac and a Rand chat each week, too. Not that I hate either one (OK, Kerouac is kinda unnerving. And yes, I "get it"), but you get my gist.

I rather like several elements of that "culture", but I can't immerse myself in it any longer. I still like Cursive, but I'll be damned if I'll go to any of their shows ever again.

However, the one good thing about this new movement is that scene kids are finally dancing. Ten years ago, they just folded their arms and smoked cigarettes.

Well that's the thing. Six months ago, I had no problems like this. I could throw on Parliament/James Brown/Rufus Thomas, shuffle it up with some new stuff, and everyone is bopping around like nobody's business. I swear in the last six months people have started treating the Crystal Castles record like it's fucking Surfer Rosa.

i do not ever get this vibe there. never heard a conversation like that

and that first CYHSY album still has some pretty good songs on it. and "my girls" pretty much always kills at a bar. i've seen people dancing to it at the Times, and that isn't really a place where people dance
