Okay, well only one E.L.F. really, but whatever.

"Activists topple towers, claim dangers of AM radio waves

(CNN) --
A group cited by U.S. officials as a domestic terrorism threat claimed responsibility Friday for knocking down two radio station towers in Snohomish County, Washington.

The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) issued a statement saying opponents of the towers argue that "AM radio waves cause adverse health effects including a higher rate of cancer, harm to wildlife, and that the signals have been interfering with home phone and intercom lines."

"When all legal channels of opposition have been exhausted, concerned citizens have to take action into their own hands to protect life and the planet," Jason Crawford, a spokesman for the group, said in a news release.

Members of ELF have been sentenced for acts of domestic terrorism in the past.

Though no one is known to have been killed in ELF attacks, the government defines domestic terrorism as use or threatened use of violence by a domestic group "against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives," the FBI's then-domestic terrorism chief, James F. Jarboe, explained in congressional testimony in 2002.

The towers belong to radio station KRKO. "There's quite a bit of destruction to the antenna system and it will probably take at least three months to get it back up and operational again," station manager Andy Skotdal told CNN affiliate KIRO, adding that much of it was "flattened like a pancake."

The station remained on the air by using a backup transmitter site, he said.

KRKO is working with authorities to find those responsible, Skotdal said, adding, "We'll use our own airwaves to do it."

The perpetrators stole an excavating machine out of a yard in order to knock down the towers, Skotdal said. Video Watch the aftermath of the scene »

The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said the Seattle office of the FBI is the lead investigative agency in the incident. Officials at the FBI office did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Snohomish County is just north of Seattle. The attack took place in an unincorporated part of the county, officials said.

In its news release, the ELF describes itself as "an international underground organization that uses direct action in the form of economic sabotage to stop the systematic exploitation and destruction of the planet. Since its inception in North America in 1996, the ELF has inflicted well over $150 million in damages to corporations and governmental agencies that are profiting from the destruction of the Earth.""

I figured as someone who is pro-environment, pro-green energy, believes global warming is a real phenomenon (for example, not my most recent thread, but the one before that was about dueling rallies between the American Petroleum Group's Energy Citizen rally, and a counter rally supporting Green Energy in Greensboro), that it falls to the more reasonable side of the green left to publicly say we are against this sort of thing. Not to mention the sheer stupidity, I mean not going after the back up transmitter too, you didn't even kick them off the air!?!? And have these people never heard of non-violent civil disobedience? You don't have to destroy property to get your point across, and you don't make allies doing so.

(here is a video from that Greensboro event I mentioned)

Also, I live about .3 miles (according to google maps) from an AM radio tower (1360 AM, you can hear it in Orange, & Durham county, & the very western end of Wake - you can easily hear it if you're driving near Southpoint).

I disagree. Any rational person knows that the actions of ELF are not indicative of the environmentalist movement.

But ELF are not terrorists, right? The guys down at the coffeehouse said so.

Why do you have to bring your butt hurt to other threads that are tangentially related?

You may be right, but I see no harm in making the distinction obvious & explicit considering how much misinformation finds its way into the political landscape.

Environmentalists addressing the actions of such groups will only draw more attention to the negative elements in society and make people assume they share the same goals.

Gunman previously convicted for protests at Maryland building

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A gunman with a possible explosive device strapped to himself entered the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring, Md., Wednesday afternoon and was holding a “small number” of hostages, police said.

Montgomery County police Chief Thomas Manger said hostage negotiators were talking with the man but said he would not reveal the nature of the negotiations. No injuries were known, he said, and he wouldn’t confirm reports that a shot or shots had been fired. "

Time to reiterate the original sentiment of this thread. Also, why target Discovery? Seems counter-intuitive.

Agreed, but you still have to state the obvious sometime to prevent critics from even getting the smallest foothold to level irrational accusations.

You would think he'd go after a business news network or something instead. I guess Discovery's one of those stations that didn't worry because no rational person would have any real gripe against them.

Did you read his manifesto? He's a whackjob. To quote someone on Fark, he's "nuttier than squirrel shit".

He may have been having some crazy paranoid episode and saw a Discovery Channel commercial or something. He's been fucking with them for a few years apparently.

The article made it sound like he thought Discovery should have more programming related to climate change and other environmental issues (like that would somehow save the earth).

I seriously doubt he will claim to be ELF. Its not really their thing to hold people hostage or enlist the help of a corporation

Given that the police have put a bullet through him, now we'll never know.

If this guy had been linked to any perceived conservative viewpoints, we would have seen a thread something like this:

"crazy white conservative atheist shoots up church" by moron

And there would be more talk of gun control; right-wing "hate" radio; the TEA Party; and "FAUX NEWS!" ad nauseum. Leftists will trip over themselves to create distance from this kook, but let one show up at a TEA Party rally or do a shoot-'em-up somewhere and they find a Hannity book or the like in his home, then all of a sudden he's representative of all or nearly all conservatives.

I'm just glad that I can still wow you and make you laugh.

As someone who cares about the environment, I try calling out bad behavior by environmentalists and I still get trolled by by burros, and hooksaw coming in saying if a conservative had similar bad behavior they would get called out even harder. Its like burros thinks I shouldn't have posted in this thread, and maybe hooks thinks I didn't post hard enough.

No credit. Can't get no respect.

I agree that this guy is a mental case. But there are many radical Enviromentalists who really believe that the planet would be better off with no humans.

Even so, your meme of questioning every thread I make, and giving patronizing attaboys whenever I post in a thread rather than making a thread is getting old. Almost every topic discussed in the soap box has been discussed before. And I'm sure with any soap box regular you can topics they have started that could have been put in older threads. Lets take you for example... I bet I can find several starting with your 9 threads with Obama in the title.
