Three Chinook military helicopters set down in a Rolesville field Monday afternoon, witnesses said.

People reported seeing the helicopters flying low and slow over Holly Springs, downtown Raleigh and elsewhere in Wake County. A viewer told WRAL News they came to rest off Rogers Road about half a mile from U.S. Highway 401.

Local police blocked off the area. A spokesman for Fort Bragg said he knew nothing about the mission and said the helicopters were not from the National Guard, Pope Air Force Base, Simmons Army Airfiled or United States Army Special Operations Command.

Well, since there were three Chinooks from God only knows where, let the conspiracies begin.

Having lived for many years outside Camp Lejune and knowing their flight rules, something was def wrong.
1 Its completely illegal for military to be doing any operations other than training in US.
2 Even with training they have to be flying at least i think its 500 feet outside of designated air space, none of which is in Wake county (airport excepting but then they follow normal aircraft rules).

Im betting someone started bashing the military and thankfully WRAL shut them down and prevented anything further.

10 bucks they got lost from Ft Bragg, even though they deny they were from there.

I doubt we'll find out what happened.

"ROLESVILLE, N.C. – Authorities said three Chinook helicopters landed in a field off Rogers Road about two miles west of Rolesville, N.C.

Rolesville police said the helicopters landed due to weather around 4:00 p.m., and it was not an emergency landing.

The helicopters were on the ground for 30 to 40 minutes.

Rolesville police were on the scene to make sure everything was OK.

Police officers did not get any information on who the helicopters were with or where they were coming from or going, but the pilots allowed onlookers to take photos."

I call bullshit. The 160th is the only unit which regularly uses refueling probes on their 47s. They might be Joint Special Operations Command now, which would mean they're not technically USASOC.

1. The Army regularly trains in pre-designated remote training areas which are outside federal military installations.
2. Army aircraft operate under more restrictive regulations than FAR Part 91 but they're not restricted from any particular airspace that a civilian aircraft could fly. I don't have a VFR sectional for that area but I suspect they were in Class G (or maybe E) airspace so it shouldn't be an issue.

It is entirely possible one of the aircraft had a precautionary landing and, due to the sensitive nature of MH-47s, they all just parked together.

I drove through Rolesville today. Saw no helicopters. Just loads of cops running radar and a probable drunk driver in the car in front of me (it's ok though because he was only going 30 in the 35 zone.)

We had two H-46s land out in our fields outside of MCAS Cherry Point about 10 years ago. They were flying in from New River or LeJune. One of the WMs on board didn't know how close they were to Cherry point.

Thinking about it, if they were doing something, they wouldn't have shut down. Almost guaranteed to be a precautionary landing on account of mechanical problems.

I called it. They were lost. Gimmie my 10 bucks.

Your reply to my no 1 still involves training. And its designated (see no2)
Your repley to my no 2 also upholds mine. They have to follow civ flight rules, which while Im no pilot, I dont believe you can be flying 200/500/damn low feet up without some reason and probably a permit of sorts as a civilian.

And yes, normally when flying in formation as it sounds like they were, you normally wanna stick together.

10 or 15 years ago a helicopter (blackhawk?) had to make an emergency landing in fuquay and they camped out there all week while making repairs.

To quote AR 95-1 Paragraph 2–10:
a. Installation commanders having Army aircraft assigned, attached, or tenant to his or her command will prepare and publish local flying rules. Rules will include the use of tactical training and maintenance test flight areas, arrival and departure routes, and airspace restrictions as appropriate to help control air operations.

c. Installation commanders may set different altitudes based on noise abatement, fly-neighborly policies, or other safety considerations. These will be displayed in flight operations and provided to the U.S. Army Aeronautical Services Agency (USAASA) for publication in the flight information publications (FLIP).

I don't know what the guidance for Fort Bragg or 160th is but there is nothing in FAA or Army regulations generally prohibiting low altitude flight. As a matter of fact, Class G airspace is the least restrictive and Class E only slightly more so.

I've spent a fair amount of time 5 - 10ft above the trees so I should know

The article says nothing about getting lost, only that they landed due to weather. They simply might not have wanted to go inadvertent IMC or they might have just not thought to bring instrument approach plates and low level charts with them . . . short sighted but possible.

FWIW, if anyone does have a problem with military aircraft being too low around their house, they can call the Fort Bragg Public Affairs Office and complain. You can request to have a noise abatement area put around your house. It might take a while, but eventually they'll do it.
