+ GPS is a one time charge, then annual map update
- Can't think of any

+ Phone offers wireless access away from home
- Extra $40-50 / month
- I already have a phone and pda (since i'm considering smart phone)

Am i missing anything

no signal on the phone = lost as fuck. GPS will still most likely work but data is used to download the maps. Plus you can't talk on the phone and use the gps at the same time

Certain 3rd party gps apps allow you to store maps which are only one time fees while others are a monthly charge (verizon) or included in unlimited data plan(Sprint). And it would also depend on the type of phone. Unless you have one with a built-in gps chip rather than using tower triangulation, loss of signal is going to mean your position won't change.

^ guess that really depends on the carrier but I lose data connection on a phone call with verizon. Plus I'm not that much of a multitasker.

True. I guess this thread would then turn into a which type of smart phone should I get.

spend the $100 on a cheapo GPS unit and keep it separate. it's nice to have it on your phone but a pain in the ass to really use a lot, imo.

yea i'd say it depends on your travel habits. if you need gps more than 3-4 /week i say get a stand alone unit. i had a nuvi 205w and sold it after i put garmin mobile xt on my nokia n95. it wokrs great but i tend to get frustrated when i use it more than a few times in a short period.

yeah i agree, i mean it's nice to punch in on my iphone something generic like "chinese restaurant" when i'm driving down the highway and not have to mess with my GPS unit..but for actually traveling I need something separate. I use my phone too much to depend on it for telling me when to turn
