Haha it is kind of like Far Cry 2. But blowing up things and running them over with cars is fun. 9/14/2009 12:48:32 AM |

I was thinking about getting this one, but the Far Cry 2 comparison is killing that desire rather quickly. What makes it like Far Cry 2?
1) Endless and pointless driving, with the obligatory map in one hand. 2) Enemies that respawn as soon as you get out of draw distance range. 3) Fragile weapons that break before you have a chance to empty the first clip. 4) "Factions" that only want to kill you. <rant>I'm pretty sure the devs for FC2 got to the point where there were too many insurmountable problems with their faction system so they said "Screw it, just have the voice actors say something about the mission being secret and how the character will be shot on sight even by the faction members for whom they are working for.</rant> 5) Open ended map... where they structure the environment such that you are funneled into taking the same path to get from point A to point B.
EDIT: I'll add another I guess. 5) NO2 boosters in every vehicle in Africa that allow enemies to catch up to you in 2 seconds - despite you blowing through a checkpoint at top speed and them not even being in their vehicles when you pass by.
I can't think of a game that was a bigger disappointment than Far Cry 2... for me at least.
EDIT2: Other notables: Malaria. How could I forget. What a great idea! Fixing your car. That was kinda cool. There was also a huge variety in the missions. Each mission was a breath of fresh air and unique from any previously played missions. None of them felt like they were just padding out the gameplay length by putting objectives in faraway/remote places.
How FC2 ever got 3.5 stars on amazon is beyond me. Red Faction: Guerrilla simply COULDN'T be as bad.

Red Faction is way better than Far Cry 2. There is a LOT of driving involved, which is the only main beef I have with it.
It's the kind of game I'd happily pay $30-$40 for. 9/14/2009 8:48:01 AM |
