i go through anywhere from 2-5 books per week (this week, i've already finished 3)

and i'm out of book ideas. nicklepickle had a good idea: you guys send me your list of books.

i HATE biographies. i HATE nicholas sparks or anything similar. non-fiction in general is not my preference. i LIKE action. i LIKE mystery but james patterson sucks balls. i'm OK with thrillers. i LIKE Scifi/Fantasy. i LIKE supernatural. i've read most "classics"

good writing is a plus, but not necessarily a requirement. i just want to be entertained for a few hours at a time. i prefer series of books as i tend to get attached to characters.

OH and one more: need 400+ pages per book

OH and another: this will sound really sexist... in general i've found i do not like women authors in the thriller/mystery/action genre. for some reason, something is always "off" with the writing/story

some authors i like: daniel silva, douglas preston and lincoln child, anne rice, robert jordan, james rollins, matt reilly (crappy writing but reading his stuff is like watching a movie), john sanford, etc.

no i didn't want to post this in entertainment. sue me.

terry pratchett (discworld) for some humor/fantasy

george rr martin (song of ice and fire) or steven erikson (mazalan book of the fallen) for epic fantasy

Try the Sookie Stackhouse Series.

It's what True Blood is based off of.

It's a good read, I enjoy them.

What about Historical Fiction

I enjoyed James Clavell.

The first book you should read is Shogun.

have not read his books and in general don't read historical fiction. but 1000+ pages plus more novels afterwards looks at least promising. may give it a shot. thanks

The River God by Wilbur Smith

An ancient Egypt novel. Only 200 pages into it and thus far pretty good.

If you do pick it up, let me know what you think. It's REALLY good and has a genre in all plots. Mystery, War, Culture, Love, etc...

I read it twice.

They're for the general audience. Some of the author's novels are for kids or "young adults."

If you like Anne Rice, try J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. They are lengthy, quite a few already out in the series, and good as far as vampire/paranormal romance is concerned. The sex can also be hot.

these are 300 pagers but i enjoyed them

the dexter series by jeff lindsay and flashforward by robert sawyer

the dexter book series is what the showtime show dexter is based on but they took a different direction with the show so its fun to read the books because its an alternate storyline

abc is doing a tv show based on flashforward that comes out at the end of the month. its scifi but easy reading

i also recently read alive by peirs paul read and i read it in like 2 days. its a 400 pager. its the true story about the rugby team that crashed in the andes and survived 72 days and had to resort to cannibalism to make it through. amazing story.

if you're looking for fun hilarious 250 pagers, chelsea handler's books are hysterical if you like her brand of humor

Black Jewels books by Anne Bishop. yea you said you didn't like girls but you should give them a chance. You can buy the trilogy in one volume so that is definitely 400+ pages.

OK! thanks for all the suggestions

^i'm good with women authors in supernatural/whatnot. i just can't deal with them in guns/explosions/spy thrillers.

well the Anita Blake books are pretty good. not 400 pages you'll blow right through them like I do. and after book 7 or 8 they're pretty much porn.

but I still highly enjoy them

[Edited on September 16, 2009 at 8:54 PM. Reason : anita blake - did read guilty pleasures... not bad. maybe i'll read the rest]

it might be a tad more than a little. i mean you'd have to read them I don't want to ruin it but there is a reason for it technically.

basically I think it's just bullshittery so she could write bookporn.

edit: the books in the series before it went porny were really good imo. I've read guilty pleasures like 5 times. the one I just read, blood noir, was probably 85% sex though it hurts my soul what she has done to one of my favorite characters

I second both James Clavell's Shogun and the George R.R. Martin Song of Ice and Fire series. If you haven't tried Stephen King, I LOVE The Stand and The Gunslinger series.

If you like children's books, you should read "Pop! Goes the Hamster & other fun microwave games"

Another good one is "Dad's new wife Roger." Never read that one myself, but I've heard from a very coloful community it's a great read.
