i'm a little leery about giving some entity all my financial info and access, was wondering if anyone has been using it for a while and can tell me about it

well they just got bought by intuit (of quickbooks and quicken infamy) this week so that maybe should be a factor in your decision

i've been using it off and on, though i track my expenses in ms money moreso than i end up using mint. i think the security concerns are probably pointless considering whether we know about it or not, various companies have portions of our financial data anyways. mint gets their data from a company called yodlee, which is like the market leader in consumer financial data as it is. have you ever heard of them? nah

I've been using Mint for quite some time and love it!

It works very well...I haven't had any issues with it so far. There is an iPhone app for it as well which is really neat. Its an easy way to track all your financials in real time and set budgets for yourself.

^Yep, me too. The iPhone app really is awesome.

They recently added a ton of functionality to the website, it's a REALLY beautiful experience.

it's biggest appeal imo. it doesn't give me the control and granularity over data that i want though, so that's why i don't end up using it very much. i probably use it most to check balances on my iphone

I use mint. It's a good tool for keeping an eye on your expenses and assets. It doesn't do a lot of things I would like it to, but it provides a good high-level overview.

You don't have to worry too much about your mint account being compromised. They worst that could happen would be that someone knows how much money you have.

^ ah, he might just be using his web browser then

in any case...i just set it up...cool stuff, but it can't find my mortgage through NC SECU, which is annoying (it finds my checking account through them, though...they both show up when i log in through the SECU website)

also, they can't connect to ING Direct right now (and they say as much when you put it in, letting you know that ING sometimes blocks their connections)

Just started recently. It's cool. Kind of like Microsoft Money, but free. Actually, I like it better than MS Money.

Big fan of mint. Also have it set to send me alerts whenever anything happens (payments, odd spending, budgeting, etc) because my actual banks online interface royally blows.

Even before Intuit bought them it was perfectly safe to provide your account information to them. Actually, I'd say that i'm a little more leery of them after the Intuit deal.

Mint uses yodlee as their backend for accessing your accounts. All banks use Yodlee as their back end for exchanging your financial data. Mint doesn't know your name, your address, your phone number. All they have is your email address and then your username / login information that you use to access your Mint.com account.

So what it comes down to is if you're comfortable using bank of america online or ING Direct online or wachovia online, then Mint.com is no different.

I use it and like it for the most part. My biggest beef is the the inability to input your own data. I have kept track of my finances pretty close for the past few years and would love to be able to input everything to see my past trends and be able to budget better for the future.

Mint will only get about a month of your info when you join then accrues as you go. I joined a couple months ago and have been waiting for any real amount of data to be taken so I can make a better budget

great interface though

i did for awhile and it worked great, probably by far the best app i've used for easy money management, or should i say credit management.

the problem i had was when i went to a cash-only system, i couldn't save amounts of money in categories for my budget even if the money was there in my bank account, i could only see how much i already spent, which doesn't help me budget really, it just tells me how much money i should have left in that category (even if i didn't have the money in my bank account)

anyhow, i use mvelopes now and it's a little more difficult to use, but does exactly what i want, though it does charge a fee.

I used Yodlee directly for a while, figuring it was just a good to go to the company who ran the backend system...

but once Mint.com put out a iPhone app, I had to switch it all to mint, cause having that info at my fingertips is extra awesome.

It should go back as far as the bank account you connected it to -- mine did.

on my banks website i can go back to forever ago, but mint doesn't show that far back. Unless there's some option to tell mint to go back im going to file it as a limitation in the connection from mint to my bank. I called my bank a while back after my online account got locked and they said because mint was logging in from multiple IPs it was confusing my banks shit and so they locked the account. The guy also said they were working on fixing it and building better support for mint, so maybe my old transactions will so up eventually.

Yeah I love mint, but I put too much of my financial info (cc's, loans, etc) into it so it just depresses me every time I log on and see my negative net worth. I haven't been on in a while, but I think I'll check out the changes.

There is no reason to be worried anymore than you are worried about using your bank's online banking. See the rest of this thread for why.

^^^uses the same back end as EVERY bank does for their online banking. mint.com knows almost nothing about you. not to mention there's nothing anyone can really do if they were to get into your account. it a service for looking at your money..not doing anything with it.

I was all set to switch from MS Money then Intuit buys them. No point in getting it all setup only for it to be turned into a subscription service or whatever.

What the hell are you talking about? I hope they can make Mint as awesome as Quicken Online was!

I like Mint for the sake of having an iPhone app. I can see all my balances at once. Everything else, I like having the additional control that Quicken gives me. I guess it's called being completely anal about your money.

^^ it won't do my SECU car loan either. It picks up my checking and savings just fine. Maybe its something to do with the way SECU has accounts set up.

lack of billpay or at least a bill calendar/alert system = suck too

plus, the javascript or something on there is just slow enough (even on chrome) to make me want to curse. overuse of modal dialogs pisses me off too.

I get alert emails and now push notifications from mint.com everytime one of my credit card payments are due.

Also the site is impressivly fast and responsive in Safari. Not to mention half of it is flash like the trends, budgets etc. I think it's either chrome or your computer that's causing performance issues.

it's not.

and i have more bills than just credit cards. i can pay every bill on a scheduled basis in wachovia online banking, and for over half my bills, they have it set up where the service provider sends an e-bill so i can see right in billpay how much is due and when it's due for each bill. if i could get that kind of action integrated into mint, that'd be great. and in ms money, i can tell it my schedule of bills, which helps a lot in the cashflow projections, which mint is also lacking in

what do you mean by this? As in export the data and download it to your computer? Because that is available. Unless you mean import data/upload data to your mint account...that is not available.

It will remain to be what it is. The founder is also remaining on board to over see things with mint as he's already been doing. Nothing will change except that it only has the potential to get even better.

ok you guys convinced me to sign up for this shit and it is pretty awesome

only thing i dont like is that it doesnt pull pending transactions, only shows them after they've cleared.

so sometimes that $25 you spent at that no name restaurant isn't visible until a week later. Same idea but smaller time frame for my $texas paychecks
