Where'd you find one for $250? 9/23/2009 2:51:34 PM |

craigslist, some guy down in benson
that was an extremely good deal, i don't know that you'll see them that often...if you check out CL on a regular basis, you'll find D40s and D60s with the kit lens for ~$350 a couple of times a month...the trick is being the first one to pick it up

christ i got my D40 w/ that lens and the extra 200mm for 549 like 2 years ago. 9/23/2009 5:35:27 PM |

so admittedly i didn't really take a look at the current pricing on D40s. Douche Bag seems to be in the lead but i'm not ready to let it go for $325 just yet. 9/23/2009 6:39:55 PM |

it's an awesome camera. i got one about a year ago when i went on vacation in colorado... first time with a DSLR, and i came back with some amazing photos. easily one of the best purchases i've ever made. 9/23/2009 6:42:23 PM |

and, as most anyone in the DSLR thread will tell you, it's just as good as any new camera, mechanically...the only MAJOR difference between the D40 and the modern entry-level DSLRs is in-camera image processing...aside from that, it's mostly just bells and whistles that may or may not actually matter to you
i have a D40 and i purchased a D90 for work that i keep with me (for all intents and purposes, it's my camera)...the D40 is smaller and lighter and my preference to carry with me in most situations...aside from cramming more pixels on the same sensor, the D40 and D90 are virtually the same camera in terms of image quality (of course, i shoot in raw instead of JPG, so that has something to do with it) 9/23/2009 8:42:30 PM |

$471 new on amazon,... so you probably wont get 425. 9/23/2009 9:43:38 PM |

So is this something that I can pick up immediately and take good pictures? I am used to Kodak point and shoots, but I need something that will make the pictures on my website look a bit better. 9/23/2009 9:45:34 PM |

depends on what you mean by "look a bit better"...you can give a person a $10k camera setup and his pictures can suck because he doesn't have an eye for composition...i've also seen good photographers take a $100 camera and turn out some great photos
that said, a DSLR gives you the opportunity to produce higher-quality photos...DSLRs have better low-light performance and give more manual control...the sensor is MUCH larger than the one on your kodak (you probably have a 0.24cm2 sensor versus the D40's 3.67cm2 sensor...that means that the D40 is roughly 15 times larger than what you've got and that makes a BIG difference)
realize that the kit lens is the equivalent of a 3x optical zoom, so if you're thinking that "bigger camera = more zoom", that's not necessarily true

FYI, D40,D60 need Nikon G lens to get AutoFocus. otherwise, you need to do it manually. 9/24/2009 2:48:53 PM |

It is again. It was a D50, not D40. It is the Nikon D50 SLR with 18-55mm Nikon lens with auto-focus or manual...camera strap, built in flash, 1GB memmory card, manual, orignal box, etc..asking $400. 12/21/2009 6:29:50 PM |

no way in hell you're going to get $400 for an entry level DSLR that's almost 5 years old
$275 is a fair price 12/21/2009 7:24:05 PM |
BigT716 All American 3458 Posts user info edit post |
So I sold this already. To Douche Bag. Don't PM me asking about price.
Also, It's worth well over 275. It's worth what market demand says it's worth. The only one on the amazon used section selling for under 400 has functions not working. 12/22/2009 7:14:17 AM |

Amazon is not an indicator of worth of used products. eBay would be a far more appropriate indicator. 12/22/2009 11:39:10 AM |

And this link says it is $1,195 on Amazon...so don't trust just one website. I paid $400 for it and have had it for about 3 months. I think $400 is fair as it was fair when I bought it.
Also on the link above, there are 18 new and used from $300. $300 means the cheapest one selling is $300...and it isnt' fully functional...review the numbers for yourself. All of the "like-new" cameras start at $450+...

I paid him what he was asking. Originally, he wanted $350 for a D40, but I paid him $400 when he realized it was a D50. I was trying to sell it at my cost on here and Craigslist, which, according to everyone, was a rip off. Apparently on Amazon it was a great deal. Put it up there at $445 to cover fees and it was gone within 24 hours. Lucky me. I guess I'm a douche bag for exercising Capitalism. 12/24/2009 1:25:36 PM |

We just upgraded to the Canon XS 10.1MP SLR with 18-55 lens. Similar camera, just newer with a better lens and slightly better technology. Relatively comparable other than being brand new, having a warranty and the optical zoom function. 12/28/2009 1:58:18 PM |
