Well fuck it. A little basketball discussion in the early-mid football season never hurt anyone.

The first three years of Lowe's tenure have been nothing short of disappointing (horrible is probably the more accurate description, save the ACC tourney run he had his first year).

Early indications are that we finish in the bottom of the conference again in Lowe's 4th year at the helm. Just trying to get a feel for what people think regarding the BBall program under Lowe. Is anyone pissed off about where we are? Is this par for the course (i.e. fuck it)? Anyone giving us a chance to be better under this coaching regime than the previous?

This is a troll thread.

But, I feel is a TERRIBLE coach... but it doesn't matter what I think because he is here for two more years AT MINIMUM.

I bet Hargraves is baller this year, though...

lol, no I'm not trying to troll. I'm just wondering if the support is still what it was going into year #1, #2, and #3 compared to year #4. Not trying to piss anyone off.

sure you're not

but sure, i'll play along

no way this is Sid's last year. With Brown and Harrow not here yet, Jed Clampett won't give him the boot.

No chance of a hot seat this year, as long as Harrow and Brown stay committed.

Next year, the pressure's really on.

oh, and yes, I anticipate us being flat-out awful this season

^^ I'm not trying to piss anyone off, damn. Chill out homey. I'm actually thinking we'll finish middle of the ACC this year. I'm thinking we'll get there on the back of the Painter kid. We'll see. I just think it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out if we suck dick again this year, which we're predicted to do

but it won't matter, because they'll never be able to get the ball

if he completely bombs like he has for the past 3 years it is entirely possible this will be his last year. We are a fucking ACC basketball team. If there is no heat on the seat for finishing shit of the league for 4 years running then something is SERIOUSLY wrong.

sid had way more talent when he started, it wasnt phenomenal talent but much more than herb.

as for the 2nd statement, the qualities i look for in a coach are winning 1rst, 2nd and 3rd, school spirit takes a distant 4th

Give him this season or one more? Because WE ARE going to suck this year. I see a bottom 3 ACC finish again.

Also has anyone else heard the rumor that Tracy Smith's high school coach gave him a car and the car was actually stolen or some stupid shit like that? I hope its not trouble because he might be all we got.

People said that Amato's last year wouldn't have been his last year.

If he wins less than 5 ACC games then I don't see why 5 years is warranted. With players that were and weren't his, he's not exactly developed serious talent.

he hasnt had a real pg yet. i'd like to see what they can do next year with harrow and brown, though realistically it might not be til the next year when they have had a seasons worth of experience that we can really expect great things.

What do you think is a proper amount of time to wait for a coach to develop a player for a position?

Cause it's not like the opportunity hasn't been there for him to do this and it's just been a disappointment. If you keep moving the goalposts like this, eventually we're going to have wasted a few years on hopes and dreams while established mid-major coaches are going elsewhere.

Herb had 6 years to make the NCAAs. Mike O'Cain lost to Carolina 7 years in a row before he was canned. Even Amato had 2 losing seasons before getting fired.

I think it starts at the top with the AD. If the AD is complacent with the current situation and if that current situation is less than good, then what can you do? Look at the University of Washington as an example. They had Todd Turner as an AD, who has ruined athletics departments from coast to coast. He said that wins and losses weren't important in evaluating a coach. He hires Willingham, who goes 0-12 last year. UW fires Turner, gets rid of Willingham, hires a new dynamic AD and head coach and bam they upset USC and are in the top 25. Granted, there's a lot of the season left, but I think it's an attitude as much as it is challenging your own athletics program with raised expectations. Carolina certainly didn't wait on Doherty. It's all about the bar that is set and expected of your program, and I think that the prevailing attitude at NC State is lower than it should be.

I like Sid, I hope he works out, but do you think he would have lasted at carolina, duke, Indiana, or any number of "basketball" schools? At the very least this would be his make or break year. I don't get that feeling with Sid...I think he's safe for at least one more year. Like I said, I think it's the attitude and expectations that are brought to the table, and if they're not where they should be, then you get mediocre results.

i think every coach deserves 4 years just to establish his players and his mentality. then you look at whether you think there's positives and building blocks. basketball is tough because coaches and programs get in so early with these kids. there's a huge positive with his recruiting and i think he deserves a couple years after the default 4 to see if this recruiting leads to good results. certainly he can be blamed for not being able to get a acc caliber pg in so many years, but we know there's one coming. i guess i'd have to see him fail when he has the pieces to be competitive before i gave up on him, but thats just me.

Just curious: what did you guys think of UVa getting rid of Leitao when they did? Was that unfair or fair based on expectations vs. results?

They went 10-18, which was their worst finish in 40 years. UVa has a set standard for what they expect, and they stuck to it, so you can't fault them. The guy they got from Washington State won in Pullman which is impressive. It's a business, they have a brand new arena that they were worried about not filling, and they want to win.

Does that model not apply to us? I mean, new arena aside, the expectations, imo, should be higher. I know people want to give him more of a pass b/c he's an alum, but I can't justify wanting to keep him if he has a losing overall record in his 4 year.

But Herb had increasingly better records each year up to that (save the 2000-01 crapper of a year when all the hope was pinned on Damon Thorton and Kenny Inge).

Sid's progress has been, at best, uneven. I'm not a big recruiting fanatic so maybe this influences my perspective since I don't make judgements based on the number of stars on recruits as much as others might. I wait till they hit the floor and get a couple years. Aside from Tracey Smith, who do you really see developing to a top ACC player under Sid right now?

for me, i watch the games and for the most part we're a competitive team that loses close games cause we have no one to rely on in the clutch to make a pass or a shot. i guess thats why i'm willing to wait til we have players like that who are on their way (hopefully). if we were just god awful losin by 20 a game with no sign of anything to build on, i'd be all for a new coach.

^i think up to this point, sid has taken who he can get since he was getting in late to the game. the class this year is his first major class. i believe howell and painter both will be quality players (and hopefully wood as well though shooters can be hit or miss), and brown and harrow will be excellent players as well. from past classes, i think cj williams and smith both have the ability to develop or in smith's case already developed into quality players.
