I realize that Seth McFarlane is an evangelical atheist and all, but I don't think he did any fact checking this episode.

Christianity didn't cause the dark ages at all, that can mostly be placed on the fall of Rome. In fact, Christianity was the only group preserving the classical knowledge.

Not that truth matters at all in a comedy show, but I know people who would accept what family guys tells them as fact.

There was a major dropoff after the Empire fell, true, because there were no real major nation-states, just warring tribes and peoples. But by 11-1200 or so Europe was past Rome technologically in basically every area, It just didn't have the huge engineering scale because none of the states were large enough or secure enough to spend so much money on civil infrastructure and architecture.

Plus this line of thinking is extremely western centric. There was no Christianity in the Middle East (well a little there), India, China, etc. China was already ahead of Rome in many ways when the Empire fell. So if there were going to be flying cars and automatic poop removers by this time, Christianity shouldn't have hurt that progress much even if it was scientifically restrictive.

if you want to say anyone saved the classical knowledge you really need to give that credit to muslim scholars, who basically reintroduced it to europe. the european clergy may have preserved a lot of the classical works but they certainly didn't really help to disseminate any of it back to the populace.

and i'd really disagree with you that europe was past rome by the 13th century, hell central heating only came back around in the last hundred years or so where the romans used rising hot air to heat their entire building via chambers under the floor and in the walls from a remote heating source (ie no big fireplace in the center of the room relying on radiant heat) like we saw in europe until very recently.

The role of monasteries in the middle ages is debatable. They furthered scientific knowledge to some extent, but it was usually directly related to religion(the invention/refinement of water clocks to know when to pray). It's also worth mentioning that they served as an early post office system, allowing for the personal letters that fueled the enlightenment.

At first I thought Family Guy had partnered with Disney for that part like they partnered with Lucas for the Star Wars parody. The anti-semite joke caught me completely off-guard and I spit what I was drinking. Haha.

Nope, they actually didn't.

Lets start at the begining. Gallileo's work was based upon the work of Copernicus. Copernicus's profession? Catholic clergyman.

Now the debate on Heliocentric vs Earth-centric did happen in the years to come. However, even before Gallileo's time, Heliocentric views were actually accepted as a theory by the church. One of the Pope's actually gave it equal standing to the Earth-centric view. It was actualy a lot like Evolution is handled by churches today (well, maybe more like the 70s or 80s). "Teach both".

Now Gallileo came along. He did his research. Of course for the time Heliocentrism was a hot topic. But he had permission from the church to write his book about why Heliocentrism was correct and Earth-Centric was not. He was in good standing with even the Pope. His views were not radical in the least.

His failure was he used his book to conclude that since Helioscentrism was fact and Earth-centric was wrong, that the Bible was wrong and couldn't be trusted at all.

So, yes, he was tried for heresy. Not because he believed in Heliocentrism, but because he condemmed the Bible and its teachings. Hell, there are still places today that you can't go and say that stuff let alone doing it in 1600s.

But I suppose summarizing the story as "ZOMG churchz hate teh progression!!!111one" is simpler for people that didn't listen in 3rd grade.

I'm pretty sure there was a good stretch during which talking about the existence of a vacuum was punishable by death. (God is everywhere. There cannot be a place that contains nothing, since that would mean that God is not in that place.)

I believe that the scientific advancement of Northern Europe is directly related to its distance and relative safety from the Vatican.
