I can't think of the technical term for it, but If you have one of those rubber grip things to help remove lids off of jars, you can take that and use it for grip and turn it off by hand. 10/4/2009 1:44:37 PM |

I would go cheap route and use the screwdriver method. It's worked for me in a pinch. 10/4/2009 1:55:25 PM |

start with just putting a piece of sandpaper in your hand to improve your grip. that may be enough to help you get the filter off by hand. 10/4/2009 2:20:01 PM |

yea, 10-20 seconds is plenty. if you filled the filter with oil you're not going to see much of a drop if any 10/4/2009 5:46:58 PM |

you need one of these with a ratchet and extention, they work a lot better than the cap style wrenches

In the future, replace your old oil filter with a Purolator pure one oil filter.
That shit has the grippy texturing on it now.
But yeah, I've used the screwdriver stab method before. Had to use two at once because I installed the thing so fucking tight. Lesson learned... 10/4/2009 9:54:13 PM |

i got the purolator gold grippy filter stuck once. i had to stab it .
saddest part was the motor was not even in the car when i removed it.

None of the filters I change requires any more than a strong grip with my bare hand. No filter should realistically require more than that. Sounds like a quick lube flunkie got their hands on it. 10/4/2009 11:16:26 PM |

These filter wrenches are like $6. Well worth buying one for each car you own. Works with a socket wrench.

if you cant get it off with the oil pliers you need to use something at the base of the filter cause it sounds like your just gonna tear up the end cap. do not stick a screw driver in it you are just gonna fuck the filter up 10/5/2009 12:44:24 AM |

It's all good until you shear the entire end off with the screwdriver. Then you're F'd.

that one Skack posted looks awesome. perfect for my buick. theres no fuckin room to put something like that ^ under there 10/5/2009 9:10:56 AM |

You'd be surprised how often ^^ will work. You can grab the end of the filter from a DEAD ON perpendicular angle and twist it off.
The one Skack posted works pretty well sometimes, however, you've gotta make sure you keep a lot of pressure on the filter so that the socket doesnt slip. 10/5/2009 9:46:28 AM |

if you don't have a lot of room a belt works in a pinch too. cinch it tight and then wrap it a around one or twice and just pull. 10/5/2009 9:50:39 AM |

I've had the type filter remover skack posted, made of metal, round off the parts of the filter it grips to. This was the same oil filter i had to stab. 10/5/2009 12:38:12 PM |

the ones that have 3 fingers and a gear so that the fingers get closer together when you turn it left work great

if you weren't a bunch of pussies, you could just take them off by hand like zxappeal and myself
and there is no need to tighten them anywhere close as tight as you can get it by hand, the sealing pressure of the gasket compressing is rediculously high with a coarse threaded filter per turn compared to the relatively low oil pressure, 25-45 degrees past touching is more than enough
the only two things you should ever need a filter wrench for are high pressure hydraulic filters (some applications not in the suction or return line), and diesel fuel filters 10/5/2009 10:07:29 PM |

This. Changing my oil for the first time after buying a car, the filter was on so tight, I was afraid part of the threads might be lost.
Stabbed that fucker, got oil all over me, but it came off, fo' sho.10/5/2009 10:25:00 PM |
