So it turns out the car to be released on June 8 is not the BRZ STi, but the production version of the WRX STi Type RA. The RA stands for "Record Attempt", the Prodrive-tuned 600 hp Type RA which attempted to traverse the Nurburgring in under 7 minutes last month, but they chose the wrong day... it was wet as hell!

I wonder how much power the production version will have.

Interestingly, it is the same car that broke the Isle of Man TT lap record last year. In-car footage linked in link above.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but those engine photos seem to show "only" a top mount intercooler and it doesn't even seem to be that much bigger than a WRX's? Seems kinda crazy for a 600hp 2L.

^^FYI Subaru is DEFINITELY revealing some new variant of the BRZ on the 8th. I don't care what that hack website says, the teaser image of a trunk with a wing they posted on Twitter last week is 100% the trunklid of a BRZ.

They may be revealing a WRX variant as well, but definitely a BRZ first and foremost.

^^ we shall see! different sources are saying different things, but all the sources that i came across which said it is going to be a brz sti after the teaser was released, have changed it to now saying it is the wrx sti ra.

Is it possible to tell from the teaser if it is the BRZ or the WRX? I thought it wasn't!

But if it is, and it is the BRZ in that teaser, then you are right!

Yes my friend, it is possible. Rear trunklid of a BRZ is considerably different than one of an Impreza.

yeah i saw that earlier today but then forgot to post it here lol.

and the latest info i read says that both will be released tomorrow!

oh, and it is going to be the BRZ tS, not a full-fledged BRZ STi... which mean no power upgrade, but updated suspension, reduced weight, etc.

at least that's what the current speculation says.

I'd be "okay" with a tS model except for the following reasons:

1) It'll be overpriced I'm sure
2) Subaru teasing images of a performance BRZ, acting like it's even worth the effort (it's not)
3) Putting a big wing on a 205 hp car is retarded any way you look at it (if those spy photos are to be believed).
4) Are we seriously to believe that it's taken SoA TWO YEARS to bring over the tS model (that's been available in Japan since 2015)

I guess I want to see a BRZ STI so that Subaru can let it serve as rally and rallycross car. I only loosely follow GRC, but Subaru is getting the shit beat out of it. It could be because they aren't investing the money they need to but I also think the shorter wheelbase cars have advantages in those races, and the WRX just keeps growing. Rally America they are still solid in, but I chalk that up to the number of privateers and the ease of converting an STI into a rally machine. WRC I see the same trend of shorter wheelbase cars.

Subaru needs to (seriously) go racing again!!!

didn't the 2002 wrx have 228 hp at a similar weight?

I wish it had more power, but the bigger problem is the price hike. I've always viewed the 86 as a sort of supermiata, but the ND Miata has gotten more motor under the hood, dropped a bunch of weight, and is what, like $5k cheaper?

Presumably the new 86 will be available with the upgraded suspension and brake package, but then you'll probably be looking at mid-30s or more...at that point, fuck it. Spend a little more and get an SS 1LE.


I actually ended up with my car after setting out to buy a cheap track toy, looking for a Miata...but the NAs and NBs were going for stupid prices if you could find a clean example, and the NCs were almost as much as an 86...so I spent a little more than I had originally planned and bought an FR-S.

Where are you coming up with any of this? Pricing for the 2nd gen BRZ hasn't been released yet. MSRP for a base 2020 BRZ has creeped up to around $29k I think, but that's mostly because last year they discontinued the "base" (Premium) trim level. The only trim level for a 2020 BRZ is the Limited model.

If the this new model is available with several trim levels, I'd expect the increase to be around $1000 across the board (any more is BS IMO). As to Miatas, maybe you haven't checked their pricing in a while but those things are not cheap. If you want a Miata with the "performance goodies" you're looking at $32-33k. A BRZ with comparable equipment (upgraded suspension and brembo brakes) is about $2000 less.

Only if Toyota sold the Yaris GR in the USA. 257 hp from a 1.6 liter, 3-cyl motorsport tuned engine, on a custom-built chassis. Most powerful 3-cyl engine in the world, and one dyno test showed 274 hp.

That car is receiving rave reviews from all corners, which is not surprising as it is a road-legal rally car.

Subaru sold the car in other markets in what they consider "base". But in the US it came better equipped so that was "premium". And now (due to lack of demand) they dropped Premium and just offer the Limited. Yeah I think it's silly.

I doubt the Yaris would sell in enough numbers in the US, given that it would cost close to (or over) $40,000. I sure as hell wouldn't be interested at that price.
