Their's new fair food this year: Deep Fried Butter. It's at the Texas State Fair now. I don't know if it will make its way to NC.

It's at the Dixie Classic Fair in Winston-Salem as we speak.
It's all they've been talking about on the news for 2 weeks. They even talked about it during the NCSU/Wake Forest game 10/7/2009 11:27:35 AM |

Love the Dixie Classic Fair. I actually just got back a few hours ago. Food wise, here's my recommendations:
-Elephant ears. These might be the quinessential fair food. Get them right next to the midway entrance (where WXII news sets up) -Deep-fried oreos. Screw the fried butter ... these things are much sweeter. -Roasted corn. Best spot is along the food row right behind to the grandstand. Stuff is awesome, and almost feels healthy. Almost. -Candy apples. There's a stand near the petting zoo that's buy one, get one free. Best candy apple I've ever had.
Really though, it's just typical fair food. For the main course, you can't go wrong with an Italian sausage or giant turkey leg. Exhibits -- the pig races are always fun, the old-timey village place is great (live bluegrass and free wine tastings), and you've got to see the prize-winning pumpkin. It's the biggest in State history ... something like 1300 pounds. Insane. Don't forget the fireworks are every night at 9

candy apples are my favorite! thanks for the tips.
we are taking my bf's bro to see the pig races, he loves them. went last year and it was raining and they wouldn't let swifty race, but the guy let chris come back and pet him because he was pitching quite a fit. (he is severely autistic with several other brain damage issues and if he is set on something you had better do it, damnit.) 10/8/2009 12:00:53 AM |

While the topping varies from place to place, they are almost always served with a stick of sorts in the middle making them easier to eat. Candy apples are a common treat at autumn festivals in Western culture in the Northern Hemisphere, such as Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night because the holiday comes in the wake of the annual apple harvest." |

If you've ever wondered what eating an alien egg would be like. Deep fried butter ranks right up there with donut cheeseburgers.
They should just put in a booth where you get liposuction and they deep fry your own fat and sprinkle some powdered sugar on.

i did not try the deep fried butter, i keep teetering on if i should get it or not. now i wish i had. i got apple fries which were excellent, not too sweet, and the apple was just tart enough. they came in a waffle cone, too! also got a ribeye sandwich, and ben got a porkchop sandwich. we shared an onion blossom. ben's sandwich was better than mine. bought the two for one candy apples, cotton candy, and some fudge to bring home. everyone who goes to dixie classic need to buy peanuts for the exchange scan, to help stop child abuse!!! 10/9/2009 12:53:15 AM |

Finally tired of hearing people freak out about it, I did some math and research.
An 8.3-ounce funnel cake has 760 calories, 44 grams of fat and 80 grams of carbs, and that's without toppings.
1/4 stick of butter (granted, without the batter and frying oil) is 202 calories, 23 grams of fat 0 carbs. Let's assume there's 1 tbsp of oil involved (I have no idea of the actual numbers), that's 119 calories, 14g fat, also 0 carbs. Then, assume the batter is something like pancake batter, and assume 1/4 cup. Again, no idea if that's correct, but 122 calories, 1.5 g fat, 23g of carbs
That's a total estimated 443 calories, 38.5g fat, 23 g carbs in fried butter. In other words, 1/2 the calories, less fat, and 1/4 the carbs of 1 funnel cake. Even if my estimates are off, it's no worse than a funnel cake, and probably better.
Whopper w/ cheese: 790 calories, 48g fat, 53g carbs Burger King dessert: Ice Cream Shake, Chocolate (syrup added): 619 calories, 33g fat, 70g carbs Large McDonald's Fries: 487 calories, 25g fat, 60g carbs
So, in case all of you who are being all holier-than-thou don't eat anything like those mentioned items, I'd stfu, not to mention we should probably all watch our diets.

So, maybe you should freak out over that fried butter, but don't pretend it's somehow worse than what most Americans eat constantly. No, you shouldn't eat it, but you shouldn't eat that Whopper, either.
Fair disclosure (haha, get it?): I enjoy an occasional Whopper or other fast food, say once every other month, but have never tried fried butter. I did, however, have half a funnel cake and a fried Reese's cup at the fair. The Reese's cup alone is 88 calories, 5g fat, 9g carbs, 1mg cholesterol. Using the same frying estimates as the butter, it was 329 calories, 20.5g fat, 32g carbs, 7.75g ch 10/11/2009 10:18:59 AM |

So all the numbers you mentioned... are they made up? Is that for 1 deep fried butter ¿nugget? or the 3 or 4 they'd probably serve you?
Hell, at least the Whopper has some kind of nutritional value to it. At least when compared to deep fried butter. And yeah, this is fried butter we're talking about here. People shouldn't at the suggestion of eating it because there might be something else out there that they are currently eating that approaches being as bad for them.10/12/2009 7:59:39 AM |

The stand I saw them at was only handing out singles.
And no, not made up. Estimated, but not made up. Links at my article here
http://www.dirtygreek.org/journal/journalId/2299
And yeah, as far as "nutritional value," a Whopper has Iron (35%), Protein (35g), Fiber (13%) and Calcium (26%). It also has 60% of your daily sodium and only 1% Vitamin C. However, I think the insane amounts of fat and cholesterol make up for that. http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fast-foods-generic/9281/2
