yeah crash landing onto an island doesnt seem to be the greatest idea....
my question is how did he make it from Indiana and not spark some terror alert? Flying too low for radar?

you would have to be LOW to terrain mask/stay below the RADAR horizon in the southeast U.S. You'd also either need to be lucky or find out where all the ATC RADARs are.
If he had the transponder turned off and played his cards right, I can see how nobody would notice. Now, once they started trying to catch up with him a day or two later, I'm sure they went to the ATC recordings and found him via primary returns on the RADARs. 7/11/2010 8:40:20 AM |

My best guess would be that he was flying all non-radar, and VFR. I guess it probably wouldn't be too hard to get his hands on some charts, turn off the transponder, and guess which way he was going. I would think that if he's a novice, he wouldn't be stupid enough to fly far enough above ground (out of the view of local topography) so that he didn't really know where which direction he was flying. Not to mention, flying too high would put him in en route traffic.
Then again.... he did crash.

Oh yeah, of course he was flying VFR, and I'm sure he left the transponder off. I'm saying that if you really wanted to be invisible, you would have to be LOW, and you'd have to know where the RADARs were and what type they were (i.e. pulse or pulse dopplar...I doubt any ATC stuff is CW.)
I think that doing this without getting caught real-time would be easy.
Doing it so that investigators couldn't easily track you when they went to the recordings the next day? You'd have to know what you were doing. Making it really tough or impossible for them to piece enough data together afterwards? That would be really tough. I think that I might could do it, with my knowledge/experience/tools at my disposal, but then again, defeating RADARs tracking airplanes is what I do for a living (although usually I would rely a lot on electronic warfare). I don't think there's any way a teenage, novice pilot would have a chance in hell of not leaving a trail.

I'm talking about the comment about sparking a terror alert and flying too low for RADAR. You wouldn't spark any terror alert--the danger would be the cops showing up 5 minutes after you landed, or knowing what island to find you on when they pieced it all together a day or two later.

he signed for a movie deal
Quote : | "Los Angeles (CNN) -- "Barefoot Bandit" Colton Harris-Moore has sold the movie rights to his life story to 20th Century Fox, a studio spokesman said Thursday. The Fox spokesman, however, said reports the studio paid $1.3 million for the right were "highly exaggerated." Harris-Moore, 20, was a teenager when he took a two-year joy ride running from the cops, which ended last year with his arrest in the Bahamas. As part of a plea deal, Harris-Moore agreed to give up any profits that may come from book or movie deals on his story. His attorney, John Henry Browne, has said his client wants any such money to go to the victims. Harris-Moore is estimated to owe more than $1.4 million in restitution. Harris-Moore led law enforcement on a wild ride across nine states and three countries. He stole, flew and crashed five airplanes. His final journey took him across eight states, leaving behind a trail of home and business break-ins and stolen cars. Surveillance video shows him taking off in a stolen plane from Bloomington, Indiana, heading to the Bahamas. Harris-Moore lasted a few more days before police stopped him by shooting up a stolen boat while Harris-Moore was stuck on a sand bar. Harris-Moore's plea deal is expected to result in a 10-year prison term when he is sentenced in late October. He also faces an assortment of state charges." |
