for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people"

yes, i realize that kdawg(c) already made this thread in TSB, but a lot of us don't venture into that particular forum and i was kinda hoping for some outrage and name-calling in the true CC fashion

personally, while i voted for obama and i genuinely like him, i don't think he deserved it...i get the feeling that HE doesn't feel like he deserves it, either, but maybe that's just me hoping he's as objective as i make him out to be in my head (i'm not a dem, per se, and i don't think obama is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but i think he's competent and decent, which is a combination the GOP hasn't been able to turn out in decades, so it's really the necessary lesser of two evils)

in any case, i agree with walsea: "so soon? too early. he has no contribution so far. he is still at an early stage. he is only beginning to act."

It seems pretty retarded that Obama got the Peace Prize. I mean, who were the other options, Hassan Ngeze and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

it's like they gave him a medal for being the first black president...or for not being a republican

in which case, the americans with common sense that voted him in deserve the medal, not the man himself

I like how they had to wake him up to tell him he'd won.

Can you imagine someone waking you up as the president?

"Sir?.... Sir? You need to wake up. Sir?"

"HUH?!? WhAT! What's wrong?! Are we under attack?!? DID SOMETHING BLOW UP?!"

"Umm... no.. "

"What happened? Is it terrorists??"

"Nooo, um, you just won the Nobel Prize."

"....."

"Yeaaaah."

"I'm going back to bed."

I think it's unfair to the other recipients.

The deadline for nominations was in February so he hadn't even been in office for a month and he was nominated. Mother Teresa devoted her whole life before she was recognized.

+1...and +1 for agreement with walesa.

FFS, Arafat was given a Nobel Peace Prize. But Ghandi never was.

As much as I dislike the GOP in its current form, W, and so many elected officials and official stances from that side

..."not being a Republican/Bush" is not a good enough reason to win a Nobel.

speaks to the sad state of the world that Obama was the one picked, that they had to choose someone that hasn't yet really done anything...

Not worthy of winning the Nobel. That falls under the 'yay not a republican president! not W!' umbrella.

I've been trying to find a list of the other nominees for this year. Sarkozy and Betancourt are on there; I'm trying to find more.

Mukwege is a name that's on the list that many people won't recognize. He's far more deserving of this than Obama.

It's good and all to sit here and talk about all the people in the world who deserve the prize, but what really matters is looking at the list of people nominated for it this year.

Some people would disagree with you regarding the compassion of Mother Teresa son.

And I'm a little bit confused about why Obama has won a Nobel Peace Prize. What exactly has he done for world peace? He has barely done anything at all in the US, let alone on a global scale, and none of it has had to do with peace....

He's a fucking cock bag and I believe he is essentially Bush's evil twin. Well, except that he makes us look even weaker as a nation by being apologetic and shit. I believe he has overly idealistic views of the world and he is naive concerning the level of hatred towards this country. I do not believe that he was the best choice as a president son, I think he is far too radical. I think McCain is an idiot and I can't stand his beliefs, but I do think he would have been much more moderate in most ways and would have been much more competent militarily, which is what we need right now since we are currently involved in conflicts and have more on the horizon in my opinion. It doesn't matter whether or not you think we should be in these conflicts, they have already started. You have to deal with them properly now and he is not capable in those regards.

lol, I haven't seen a single pro-Obama person saying he was a good choice. More like, this is something the anti-Obama crowd will hang onto forever as if it was somehow Obama's fault that he was given the award.

Nothing against Obama, but man... this must have been a pretty weak year.

I can imagine someone that's devoted years toward winning. Doing all kinds of things they didn't want to do just to raise their stock, Nobel Peace Prize grubbing all the way. Finally seeing their opportunity on the horizon. "Yes! 2009 is the weakest year yet. I'm a shoe in!" Then Obama gets elected, wins in the last second and they end up losing again. Kinda like a bad movie cliché.

If I won it out of the blue, not understanding why I received it, I may be tempted to refuse it so it could be awarded to someone more deserving... until the cash prize was brought to my attention. Then I'd start to convince myself of all the reasons why I earned it.

It does seem like a weak year for peace-making. The only exception I can think of is Bill going to North Korea to break out those two chicks.

A bit preemptive but either way, our President did just win the Nobel Peace Prize and I think that is pretty awesome. It has been quite some time since we last saw this amount of respect from other nations.

Although, it does say a lot about the people of this nation when they hate on him for winning a such an honor. Cut the guy some slack yo!

After W, it doesn't take much for the rest of the world to have a better opinion of the US.

I don't see anyone hating on him - shit, even he wasn't expecting it. This is a reflection on the Nobel committees, not Obama.

But even if it were...he's got a Nobel Peace Prize now! No slack for Obama!

Utterly ridiculous. My response on hearing this was, I presume, the same as most other people's--"what the fuck for?" I mean I voted for Obama, and while I'm not entirely happy I certainly haven't given up on/turned against him yet, but this is some bullshit. I don't care who the other nominees were, I'd give it about a 99.9% chance someone else deserved it more.

^^^ He has done nothing to deserve this award. It is likely simply encouraging him to do what the rest of the world wants us to do, weaken ourselves any number of ways (In this case, by disarming the population). I think it's a nod to his filthy anti-self defense and anti-firearm stance.
