I just got a netbook running Xandros, a Linux based OS and I'd really like to stream movies/tv shows from Netflix. Unfortunately it seems that Netflix is only compatible with Windows and Mac when it comes to streaming. Aside from remote desktop, are there any ways I could "trick" Netflix into letting me stream stuff?

It runs on Silverlight so there's nothing you can do

Moonlight is the open source implementation of Silverlight, but last I checked it's nowhere near ready for apps like Netflix

moonlight 2 is supposedly almost done, which should include the DRM support netflix needs

there's a beta out now http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight-beta but i'm not sure if those DRM bits are in there

It's impossible. I've investigated it thoroughly. This is why I installed Windows on my Netbook.


And Netflix is going to never, ever develop for Linux. I've personally asked someone who works in tech support for Netflix about this.

actually, now that i think of it, netflix still might not work once moonlight 2 comes out. i was thinking of live streaming sunday night football that is supposed to work

if you have a windows PC, you can install playon on it, and then you should be able to view it in your linux machine with any DLNA compliant client.

Of course this doesn't help you when you're away from home


Also, you could install virtualbox on it, and install a windows guest, but I'd guess that the netbook doesn't really have enough horsepower for this to be viable.

I really like linux for everything i can do in it.... the only stuff that sucks are the rabble rabble no open source people can use our shit rabble rabble...

I mean networking is easier.. the system doesn't randomly shut down... not to mention i think it is prettier.

some people have printing issues but even though i have a hp printer on someone's spare apple airport mine prints wirelessly better than the same printer can in windows (airports suck as vista print servers)


ohh and then there is the fact that when i'm busy working on lots of stuff with lots of windows open on multiple desktops the most memory i've used in linux is 600 megs vs the almost 1gig my vista o.s. idles at.

i am however planning on jumping to winders 7
