I'm headed to St. Louis next week for a conference and was wondering what there was to do around there? I'll be there for 3 days and won't have a lot of time, but still would like to see some new things since I've never been there. I'm staying at the Hyatt Regency right across from the Arch if that's of an relevance.

I was there for two weeks, so had a bit more time, but here are the things I did that I enjoyed:
- Visited 'The Hill' neighborhood (Italian area) and ate at the restaurants/markets.
- Visited the 'Fabulous Fox' theatre (for whatever is playing, in your case)
- Visited the 'Forest Park' area downtown near Washington Univ
- Included the Art Museum, the Zoo
- Visited the Botanical Gardens; if the weather's nice and you have time, it's pretty cool.
- Visited the 'CWE' (Central West End) and stopped at the restaurants, shops.
- Visited 'Soulard' for good food, bars.

I just spent a lot of time walking around while I was there as well, taking pictures. St. Louis is a funky little town. Stay on this side of the river though...

^^Yes, fun things like getting shot, stabbed, and curb stomped for being white. Good ole East St. Louis.

^^ yeah, no shit!

st. louis proper is kind of interesting city in a lower-middle class, blue collar sort of way. if your idea of going out on the town is listening to local blues/rock and drinking domestic swill, you'll have fun. but def stay on the missouri side of the river.

if you're in that region, i'd say skip St. Louis altogether and go on down to Memphis. the bands are better, more culture and diverse nightlife: honky tonks, metal bars, dance clubs and after hours events, hotter chicks everywhere ... and running around the city is nowehre near as dangerous.

I live in Soulard, which is about 2 miles away from the Arch. For God's sake, do not cross the river. If your buddies say they want to go to a strip club, that means you're going across the river, so don't do it. Oh, and don't cross the motherfuckin' river. Other than that, here's what I got:

1. If you're into the sightseeing, the Arch, Zoo, & Art Museum are all top notch. A museum you may not hear about is the City Museum, off Washington. It's hard to describe, but all I can tell you if you'll feel like an 8-year-old kid on acid at Chuck-E-Cheese. It's really fucking cool. Of course, you might look kinda lame if you go by yourself.

2. I highly recommend a tour of the Anheuser-Busch factory. It's located here in Soulard and I think they go until about 6 at night.

3. Your dining options depend on how formal you want to go. If you're going out w/ business folks and need something a bit more business-like ( but not black-tie) , you can't go wrong w/ 1111 Mississipi near Lafayette Square or Frazier's in Benton Park. If you and some buddies just want beer, burgers, & atmosphere, you've got to go to Blueberry Hill on the Delmar Loop. That's the original Chuck Beery hang-out and it's a good fucking time.

4. As previously posted, St. Louis is a good drinking town. I recommend McGuirk's Irish Pub in Soulard, Square One Brewery in Lafayette square (Brewpub so more of a low-key atmosphere, but my personal favorite) or there's a great selection on Washington Avenue, which is round the corner from your hotel.

5. There's a cool place called Flamingo Bowl that has several bowling lanes, a few nice pool tables, and full-service bar on Washington if you're looking to entertain after the conference.

6. Lumiere Place is the casino right next to the Arch in Laclede Landing. It's a pretty nice casino, just be prepared to buy your own drinks. They don't comp in MO.

7. CWE (Central West End) is also easy to get to . From your hotel, just take Olive west till it turns into Lindell and you'll run right into it. Maryland Square is where you want to go. Pretty cool assortment of restaurants/stores. Kind of a European vibe, which means the service sucks ass, of course.

There you go. Hope that helps. Steer clear of the hood and should be an enjoyable week for you.

In town this weekend. Anyone have any more recent tips (though I assume most of the above still applies)?

One new thing since the original post is City Garden in downtown. Kinda cool this time of year if you just have a fairly short amount of time to kill downtown. Catch a Cardinals game (I think they're home this weekend). The east side is still the east side, crazy shit happens over there.

Central Table Food Hall just opened May 6. It's in CWE, one of the busiest district, due in part, to Siteman Cancer Center and Barnes Hospital. I've heard mixed reviews about the place, but it's worth checking out.

Some pictures and description of the place.
