Post here whenever North Carolina's own Congresswoman Virginia Foxx is making the news!

To get us started, here are a few fun favorites from this year:

Yep, she's a death paneler

Matthew Sheppard's murder was a hoax, said with his mother in the audience

You can read this story here. I actually feel a little sympathy for her here, I'm sure its annoying getting hounded by questions, even if the questioner is follows the rules on interaction with an elected official.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/14/793436/-Virginia-Foxx-calls-Capitol-Police-to-have-me-detained...-twice

That one was from this week, and got me thinking there needed to be a collection of Congresswoman Foxx's best moments. She represents district 5 which is the northwest end of the state with some Virginia & Tennessee borders, plenty of mountains, and 1 "big city" Winston. I take particular interest because she represents my hometown of Mt. Airy where I grew up.

There have to be more good Foxx News stories out there.

I hate virginia foxx

My dad hates her also, because he has to deal with her sometimes being in local government in her district.

A friend of mine from my App grad school program was her personal driver when she's in the area.

Foxx believes or believed that the healthcare reform legislation included provisions for death panels.

This is Robert Reich's blog response to that clip of him curculating:

Quote :
"Lou Dobbs, Sean Hannity, Rush, and the right-wing blogosphere seem interested in a talk I gave in September, 2007 to students in a political science class here at Berkeley, in which I played the role of a presidential candidate so politically incorrect and tone-deaf as to pummel every sacred cow in sight -- including the notion that our society could afford and would continue forever to pay whatever amount of money was required to keep everyone alive forever. The whole point of the mock exercise was to show that presidential candidates can't state what everyone knows to be the truth because they'll be taken apart by the Right or the Left. I slew many other sacred cows in that mock exercise, some of which are held dearly by the Left. Nonetheless, two years later the Right has exhumed the lecture and taken my words completely out of context purportedly to show that Obama and the Democrats plan death panels.

If their desperation weren't so pathetic it would be funny. After all, they have proven the whole point of my lecture. UC Berkeley maintains an archive of webcasts and my speech is available there verbatim, should you wish to listen to it in its entirety."

So, what the fuck does this have to do with what Virginia Foxx said?

"I believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country."

We should be more afraid of a health care reform bill than terrorism, really? Fear-mongering FTL

It pisses me off that I live in her district.

I am right on the border of the 12th District. As in my next door neighbor votes in the 12th. According to the map, my back yard is in the 12th and my front yard is in the 5th.

All of Winston should be in the fifth, anyways. The 12th is gerrymandered as crap. It'd water down all the yokel votes out west.

I don't see why people get so outraged over "death panelers"

Saying that ObamaCare will create death panels is obviously a symbolic reference to the politically based rationing of healthcare that will occur in any government run healthcare system.

I guess its just partisanship on both sides of the aisle. Conservatives engage in garden-variety hyperbole while liberals stand aghast at the use of such a rhetorical device (until they use it to decry "torture panels" in gitmo )

sigh.... carry on.

Well, except that that's not what the term was created to mean at all.

The term was created in reference a portion of the bill that pays for end-of-life counselling sessions. Things like "making a budget for retirement" and "crafting a will." You know, normal stuff one should do towards the end of their life.

It's not a reference to rationed care, it was just referenced in a paper that also argued against rationed care. If it was about rationed care, then people could have fairly easily pointed out private companies have the same setup, just look at yearly maximums (particularly on dental care) if you don't think that private health care is rationed.

My point is that it's symbolic political rhetoric. Surprisingly, rhetorical devices used in political debates can be easily refuted if one chooses to ignore the larger issues to which they speak.

The only way it is symbolic is how it shows the conservative base to be full of fear-mongers and idiots.

i'm not defending them so much as I am pointing fun at the histrionics that liberals put on display when confronted with republican rhetoric

it's almost as if they have no ability for objective thought and can't remember the overstated and unfactual accusations they made against bush for 8 years.... just scoring political points. General Betrayus... etc... Come on man seriously? It's all just a partisan game.

Pretty funny when people take it so seriously and act all, "OMG AWKWARD - I AM SO EMBARRASSED" when confronted with a little rhetoric from the opposing side

I love politics. I probably follow politics more closely than you guys do. Its interesting that you bring up sports, because I don't particularly like sports and have always considered politics to be my flavor of sports. I'm buying a six pack of beer and a bag of doritos to watch the election results tonight

I understand the game of politics. I can see beyond the surface-level "OMFG DEMONIZE THAT GUY" propaganda of the hour (from both sides). Its not my fault that you guys allow yourselves to be manipulated by conservative or liberal talking points.

Anyway, carry on flipping the fuck out because some republican is using political rhetoric.

I'm guessing al-qaedites and talibanners are in favor of us letting the gov't take over the health-care system and adding another $1.2 trillion to our already blown-up debt. Why would they be against us screwing up our own deal?

There's more than one way to destroy the infidels. Why not let them do it to themselves?

I don't think you understand what carzak is saying.

It doesn't take a genius to recognize political rhetoric. Obviously the people who devised the term "death panel" know what they are doing. The problem though is that while it doesn't take a genius to see this, the average person (and plenty congresspeople) is well below the threshold of experience or intelligence to realize what is going on, and this type of rhetoric is very harmful to worthwhile political growth.

If the public face of politics, that some people are actually taking seriously, is an orchestrated game of name-calling, it's going to make getting anything done harder.

It's irrelevant that this is "business as usual" because it shouldn't be business as usual.

And you are wrong to imply that both sides are equally to blame, for many reasons, but the most clear demonstration of this is that there is no leftist equivalent of Limbaugh/Hannity/Beck/Malkin to spread the ridiculous rhetoric. There was broad denouncement of the "General Betrayus" comments among the left too, but you are hard pressed to get a republican politician to decry anything Beck says.

there was no broad denouncement of general betrayus and there certainly wasn't broad denouncement of murtha's slander with respect to the Kaditha incident

how about clarence thomas? no broad denouncement of that

OK look - you're acting as though Saul Alinsky wasn't a liberal... He wrote the manual followed by liberals for the past 40 years. Don't pretend that liberals don't demonize or that this is somehow a republican only tactic. Ugh god.. you partisans

Even if liberals were equally guilty of the same tactics in the past (which I don't agree with), the GOP attack machine is and has been in full force since before the election. And that is mainly why they are currently being focused on.

I define partisan as "devoid of reason"

When you argue that liberals don't demonize and attack their opponents, that qualifies you as a partisan.

I'm right leaning... I'm not neutral by any means. The difference between me and you is that I am aware of and can acknowledge the faults in the conservative side. I also understand the game (yes its a game) that is being played by both sides. That puts me at a much higher plane of political consciousness than your dailykos reading butt

Who is arguing this?

You're saying that the left and the right right now are equivalent in scale in the use of certain tactics, and this is very blindingly obviously not the case.

So, when was the last time you did this? All you have done is make a general statement about how both side are guilty, but you only attack the left.

I don't see how she could be reelected after all this.

Her district includes a lot of rural areas, but there's also Lewisville-Clemmons (which might lean conservative, but not wing-nut conservative) and Boone.

She's a senile, hateful woman. That speech of hers talking about the killing of Matthew Sheppard cost her whatever credibility she ever had. It's inexcusable for her to remain in Congress after that.
