I have a Wii and 360. I have had the 360 for a little over 2 years. 3 weeks ago I was struck by the RRoD. I am thinking about getting another system. Which do you recommend b/w 360 and PS3. Thanks in advance.

^^No, i just sent mine off 2 days ago and I had no receipt bought it ~2 years ago. Just go online, put in your serial and print a shipping label. done and done.

btw. definitely 360...not even close. I own both and the first time i've turned on my PS3 in over a year was for uncharted 2.

You get so much more use out of a 360. Xbox Live is just that good. I personally stream music from my laptop to the 360 and play it through the surround system mostly, but I also use Netflix. Netflix makes it worth it by far, as far as comparing between 360 and PS3.

The games are comparable, with either system you'll be entertained one way or another. The big things are the internet capabilities.

Also, check this recent thread out message_topic.aspx?topic=576041

360 all the way. PS3's advantage is all about the hardware capability, yet there are very few games on the market that showcase the PS3's true potential. I swapped my PS3 for an Xbox so I could download and burn my own games. That was pretty much the deal sealer for me.

if you have have an hdtv and/or are anything less than a hardcore gamer i'd say the ps3.
1)ps3 has wireless add 100$ for xbox
2) online gaming is free $8/ mon
3) netflix isn't that great...torrent the movie and stream it WIRELESSLY for free
(or if you have netflix get the blurays in the mail)
most of the titles are on both systems. i do agree that online play and the selection of games is much wider on 360. but overall the ps3 is a much better value

PS3
Blu-ray
Free Online
Wireless included
Even though XBOX may have more games, there are already too many for me to play on PS3. I still haven't gotten to MGS4. But that depends on how much gaming you do. I don't play it every single day.

But obviously replace the XBOX if it is free

good discussion so far, hopefully the fanboy bias will stay out of it.

as said above, if you are not a hardcore gamer the other benefits make the ps3 a must.

I have a friend who owns a ps3 and doesn't even own one single game. But he uses the ps3 almost daily to stream movies and tv shows from his laptop or directly off his external HDD.

I use mine about 50/50 for gaming and media. It's my blu-ray player, dvd-player, and movie player for my downloaded movies and games.

Then as for gaming...it depends on what you like. Xbox and PS3 both have the Call of Duty series, both have Grand Theft Auto (if relevant), and all EA sports games.

XBox has several exclusive titles, the only ones coming to mind right now is Forza Motorsport and Gears of War so if you are a huge fan of either then the Xbox may still be your best shot. But PS3 has some great exclusives out right now. Uncharted 1 and 2 are absolute must-plays if you own the system and Grand Turismo 5 is right around the corner.

To each their own, they are both great systems. The Xbox seems to have more support on the online end of things, but you'd expect that if you are paying ~$10/month. The PS3 is catching on in that area though.

For me, it was the overall package the PS3 brought to the table and being more than just a video game system. That, and i know i'm in the minority, but the playstation controller is just more comfortable/ergonomical in my hands.

the xbox is also more than just a video game
player. Aside from bluray support I think the xbox has done a far better job for a multimedia device.

i agree with the ps3 controllers. they've always been the best. the xbox ones are big and awkward to me. plus they're ugly

i'm not a hardcore gamer but i play a shit ton of rock band and littlebigplanet (only on ps3). i use the bluray player a lot too. def worth it imo

I agree with everything he said.

I have both, and I use the PS3 primarily as a Blu Ray player. The exclusive games are still by and large mostly on 360, and virtually any game available for both systems is better on 360. Sure, PSN is free as opposed to the outrageous $4.17/month on XBL Gold ($50 retail for a 12 month card, although I've never bought one for more than $30 or so).

Don't get me wrong, when God of War III comes out, or FF 13, I'm going to be playing them on PS3 (because that's the only system they'll be available for). But for the vast majority of games, I'd hands down opt to play them on the good ol' 360.

^Incorrect, FFXIII will be on the 360 also.

I must ask the OP what you you will be primarily using the system for?

Both consoles are great for multimedia, except the PS3 obviously has the blu-ray advantage. In terms of streaming and stuff, I've never had a problem just downloading stuff, throwing it onto a thumb drive, and plugging that into my Xbox. I'm sure you could do the same with a PS3 though. Netflix is VERY convenient though and should not be understated. In terms of online playability, you really do get what you pay for. Sure, the Playstation Network is free, but seriously Xbox Live is not too expensive and it really does stand out amongst the competition.

In terms of games, Xbox has been out a little longer than PS3 and thus has a larger gaming library. There are only a few decent PS3 exclusives, but the 360 has TONS. I would recommend 360 unless you plan on watching a lot of blu-rays.

First, thanks guys for the great feedback. It has all been helpful and doesn't seem gamer bias in any post.

I would probably split this system between gaming and multimedia. I, regrettably, have less time to play my system in grad school. I play Madden, NBA 2k, Halo(s), and Scene It (with the wife). The first three games are greatly enhanced through Live.

I think I will try to return my current 360 for a replacement. Can someone post the link to enter my serial number for RRoD replacement?

Thanks again.

Off of the top of my head, decent 360 exclusives include: Mass Effect 1 & 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Dead Rising, Alan Wake, Fable 2 & 3, Forza Motorsports 2 & 3, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Shadow Complex, and the aforementioned Gears of War/Halo.

Some of these are also available on PC but are exclusive in this sense since they aren't available on PS3.

One thing M$ seems to do is go out and get exclusive DLC for some big titles.

That really angered me before GTA4 was released. Then GTA4 was such a bore that i didn't even care. Hell i haven't even beat that game yet.

oh, another great PS3 exclusive is Resistance 2. Especially if you like FPS and Sci-Fi.

Yeah Resistance 2, Uncharted 1 & 2, MGS4 , Little Big Planet, God of War 3, Gran Torismo, Ratchet & Clank, and Killzone 2 are some of the top PS3 exclusives from my experience and what I have read/heard from others

as much anticipation as Killzone 2 brought to the ps3 for months and months it seems like that game just fell by the wayside. I was really looking for a COD replacement before that game came out, and it came out to great reviews by the gaming outlets but not so much by the players. I never even bothered to pick it up and try.

I've been looking into buying one or the other as well, this is what I've been able to gather ^

XBox live has more people playing games that require cooperation like Halo. I have a PS2 and honestly the only game I ever really played for it in the past three years has been God of War II, and it's probably going to lead me to buy the PS3 so I can have a Blu-Ray player and the option to buy/play God of War III when it comes out. I don't really have any interest in FPS games where you have to coordinate with people, I'd much rather just be able to pick it up, play for as long as I want and then be on my way.

I've always had the impression that the 360 has the better collection for FPS games, and a solid group of online players to make the experience better than the ps3.

I'm planning on getting the ps3 still b/c:
Blu-ray
wireless
free online
I'm used to a ps controller

My old roommate had a 360, and while it was a solid system I never really took to liking the way the controller felt in my hands. Guess too many years of playing ps built a deep affection for their controller.

I've had the opposite reaction with the 360 controller. I had a Playstation before I had a Xbox and was accustomed to the PS controllers and hated the xbox one. But I actually like the 360 controller so much better now that its smaller.

Just out of curiosity, is there a particular reason that more people seem to be on Live? It seems like a free online network vs. a subscriber one would make the opposite true.

I think Halo, combined with the 360 being on the market longer. Halo was probably the first next-gen online mega-hit. It attracted so many people that they all continue to faithfully stay with X-box Live and X-Box in general. and of course fanboys...something that will never change

Interesting. Don't get me wrong; my 360 is my baby, but it's hard not to look at free online play and not be a little envious.

if you guys arent using this for your wireless on Xbox 360, you are missing out. That little wireless adapter that Microsoft makes is a piece of shit.

This little box by Linksys is 100 times better and cheaper.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124279&cm_re=wireless_gaming_adapter-_-33-124-279-_-Product

that being said, they both have their advantages. I own all three systems.

PSHome is awesome (and free). I think that is one of the coolest features of all the video game consoles. Getting the BluRay player in addition is pretty damn sweet as well. I have used the hell out of it since I got it. What lacks for PS3 is their slow production of exclusive games. Other than the God of War Series and a few others, PS3's game lineup doesnt stand out that much.

Xbox has a huge lineup of games, along with a great online service + Netflix. It's a shame that they are the only console that feels the need to charge you for online play. That is lame IMO. I personally like the Xbox controllers more than the PS3 for specific games like FPS. I dont know why, I just do.

If I had to choose one for sure, I would probably pick the PS3. However, since I have both, it was obviously a decision I couldn't make

I would prefer the old PS3 console to the new slim. That thing just looks cheap to me.

I'd just like to add the that PS3 Slim is a pretty slick piece of hardware. I was forced to pick one up because of problems with my original 60GB and I really like it. It's super quiet, small, and fixes all the little usability issues the original one had. The matte finish doesn't attract dust and finger prints like the original one and it has actual buttons rather than those touch pads for power/reset/eject. Plus it just looks really nice.

while yes halo does contribute but that is not at all one of the reasons for Xbox Live's success over PS3's freebie.

The xbox being on the market first was part of the reason. (although when it comes to Sony/Xbox fanboys neither is going to buy the other console regardless of who was released first). Xbox also had a much better execution from day one. It took the PS3 a long ass time to catch up to what the Xbox had at launch.

In my opinion, sony just did too little too late and completely lost out on the online community. Stuff like Achievements, being able to send/receive messages to your friends while playing a game just to name a few are reasons why Live was more successful.

The only games I play on the PS3 are the exclusive titles (which so far is just the uncharted series that i'm interested in and I have GT5 prologue but only played it a few times)

I'd rather have a quality pay service than a free half-ass service (in my opinion)
