I'm going to buy a new laptop soon and i know asus gave me a system disk with windows on it that i could do a clean install from. As you may have read from other threads my Asus's graphics card died 4 weeks outside of its warranty... Needless to say i'm probably not going to be buying one for a while. Most people have good luck with asus customer service but honestly they've been pretty douchey to me. ( so many of these laptops have done this that they don't have spare parts to fix them anymore... )

I know toshiba doesn't

Dell and HP used to give them if you paid for them i dont' know if this is still the case or not.

Has anyone seen/used an MSI laptop?

most come with the dvd you want as a recovery partition which is better. unless you need that 7gb later.

i know that Dell still ships DVDs with a lot of their systems, although i tend to buy the business models and specifically ask to have the DVDs included. same with HP.

the dell's we've gotten lately at work have came with DVD's. also, with some mfg's it comes with a utility to make your on DVD.. I know HP used to do that. no clue if they still do, though

and you could also just download the copy from a torrent site then use your legit key..it's really not something to worry about if you've paid for a legit key

the problem with a lot of those restore discs is that they have said crap already built-in. Lenovo sure knows how to crap-up a laptop, for example.

agreed on lenovo stuffing in more bullshit than i've ever seen in my life..fucking ridiculous. i ended up wiping this one that came with XP Tablet+lenovo's pile of shit to just a clean install of win 7 and it was a hell of a lot faster (x61t). the fucked up thing is you HAVE to use their utility to get the keyboard buttons working to turn bluetooth/wifi on before windows can even detect it. i ended up installing most of the lenovo shit trying to figure that out..and some of it i STILL haven't figured out how to get to uninstall properly.

and the HP's i was talking about in particular were desktops. i figured the laptops were the same though

i like asus because not only do you have the recovery partition and the dvd but everything is also on their website and you dont have to jump through hoops to find it all which was great when I upgraded to win7

and i liked that i could get rid of all the hotkeys on my touchpad, that shit was annoying and i never use any of the other hotkeys anyway

^^ that bit with having to install Lenovo's crap to get wifi going really chaps my ass, too. if you have to do anything special with network encryption settings, their crap is literally in the way. i had to work on two relatively new thinkpads late this summer (pre-configured by someone else), and the hardest thing i had to do was to make them talk to WPA+PEAP-secured wifi. i'm pretty sour on lenovos at the moment, and i'm the one with the buying power in my office. oops.

Toshiba on the otherhand, does not. Those are the only two PCs that I have purchased in the past 4 years.

^^yea that shit drove me nuts..actually, wifi i got going without too much trouble now that i think about it. i guess because it was already "on" from the previous owner/OS. bluetooth was a whole other fucking issue, though. the only way for it to be turned on is by one of lenovo's utilities that uses Fn+F5 to turn it on/off. not to mention that utility wasn't suppose to be compatible with win 7

^ the more that i think about that, at least it was a Fn+F-key combo. these other laptops with wifi switches on the sides of the cases are just bat-shit crazy. they're too easy to accidentally turn off. and guess what happens when some unsuspecting person does so? "HEY TECH SUPPORT, WHY ISN'T MY INNANET WORKING?"
