yeah, it depends on whether the drive is physically damaged or not

if hooking it up to an external enclosure doesn't work, i'd try swapping out the controller with an identical one from ebay or somewhere.

you could always try the redneck leave it in a freezer overnight trick.

However if the trick fails it may also lower your chances of real data recovery.

For the record, you'll go through this process once, see the prices and then understand why an enclosure with multiple drives that employs some kind of redundancy is worth $400.

take the drive out and use it like a USB thumb drive and get all your data off.

enjoy, there is your $20 solution and now have an adapter for future uses.
