More specifically:

Slot #1 Avant Technology 1024MB PC2-5300
Slot #2 Malaysian Bargain Bin Special 256MB PC2-4200U
Slot #3 Samsung 512MB PC2-5300U
Slot #4 Malaysian Bargain Bin Special 256MB PC2-4200U

This is probably a very ignorant question, but in this case am I still better off with the 1GB of extra RAM? Especially since there currently isn't any dual channel kit installed to lose. WinXP32 ATM, perhaps Win7 in the future.

Ultimately, I'll end up maxing with a 4GB dual channel kit, but it's a work PC so I'll be waiting until it's purchased for me.

For general purpose stuff more ram is almost always better. For windows 7 its definitely better because of superfetch.

Yeah, which is why the prices make absolutely no sense.

Unless this IBM Thinkcentre is kind to overclockers I don't think frequency will matter.

unless its graphics memory on a high bandwidth grapics card cause i know my nvidia 8600gt with 256 megs of ddr 3 blew away the one with 512 megs of ddr2.

that being said my laptop with its ddr3 is way faster than my old one with ddr2... but then i ditched windows too.
