^^^upgrading iMovie isn't free...but iMovie is included FREE with every Mac and you can't use it on any other platform...so yes its free. If you have a mac, you have iMovie.

It is not free, it's included. Actually, iMovie is part of iLife, and iLife is included.

There are people out there who have macs and don't have imovie. if it were free, they could simply download/request it, get it somehow without paying for it. iMovie is part of iLife, it costs about $80.

which is FREE when you purchase a computer NOT FREE when you purchase a iLife disc on its own.

so yes...its FREE.

and if you have a Mac without iLife then you have a really old Mac or you bought an upgrade OS disc and did a clean install and didn't put your original discs back in to reinstall iLife.

[Edited on November 2, 2009 at 12:16 PM. Reason : and by upgrade disc i mean a OS that didn't ship with your machine.]

obviously, anyone who doesn't already have iMovie (for ex., the OP) would have to buy iMove/iLife or buy a mac. Thus, it is not free.

yeah, if you can't get the upgrades for free, it's not free

they're just giving you a taste

obviously I provided an alternative windows solution.

and just because you have a Mac or access to a Mac doesn't mean you know everything thats on there...same goes with windows...I doubt he's using linux so in either case he wasn't aware that his OS has a free video editor already installed.

^lol? that is just dumb. Its not a 'taste' if you have the full version of the latest iLife at the time of purchasing your Mac just like you have the latest OS of that time. You guys can't be that dumb?

Thats like saying they only give you a 'taste' of the OS because you can't get the newer releases for free.

No, you buy the OS. It's included in the cost of the entire thing. That's my point with included vs free. There is a difference.

You can't buy a new Mac without either. That's my point.

^^by that logic there is no such thing as free software. Did I say buy a fucking mac? no...i said IF you have a mac you'll have iMovie

IF you have a PC you'll have movie maker

/thread...now stfu and pull that wad out of your crack.

Not to mention I am the only one in this thread to actually recommend some thing that the OP was looking for (Windows or Mac)

^I can buy an older Mac, or a refurb Mac and will not get iLife with it. If I have a vanilla Apple computer, with no software on it (which is, amazingly, possible) then it's going to cost me $80.

95% of the computing world has a PC. 5% has a Mac. Which of those two is making the assumption that someone will have to purchase something?

MovieMarker is ALWAYS FREE. You can get a donated computer, put linux on it, and run Wine, and use Movie Maker.

iLife costs $80. It's a pretty fucking simple difference.

if you insist, i'll respond since you obviously don't read other peoples posts and because somehow this is going to end up into a 'well Microsoft...' comment from you.

and since the OP made it very clear what platform he's working with...i decided to be safe and mention both a windows solution and mac solution IN the same post. But I do apologize if I hurt anyones feelings by mentioning iMove in the line above MovieMaker. I in no way was trying to imply that iMove was above MovieMaker...

If you bought a Mac from CL here are the possible scenarios.

1) they provided the original software/install discs that came with the machine (iLife is included)
refurb
2) they did not provide the above software but rather just a separately purchased OS disc. Then no you won't have iLife but chances are the reason they purchased that OS disc is because its a newer version in which case you win because you don't have to go out and buy the latest OS. Unless of course they just happened to lose the original install discs and just ended up providing you with a replacement disc.

3) you bought it with a clean drive and no OS. well in that case iLife is the least of your worries.

You are dumb...thats the correct assumption. The OP didn't mention what computer he had to buy to do video editing...he obviously already has one but we don't know what kind...so again...provide an answer for both common platforms. I would have provided a linux solution but I'm not familiar with any.

Ok...i see how we're trolling this.

Solitaire isn't free...I had to buy a dell and a windows license to play it.

It's pretty pedantic, and mostly trolling, but there's still a difference between including one free copy of one version of a program with a new computer purchase and offering free access to a program for your operating system in perpetuity.

I don't think it's dumb. I have a disc for a free/full version of Nero cd burning whatever that's like 5 years old that I got with some computer, but it's pretty fucking old and shitty compared to what's available today, so I don't use it. I might have even thrown the disc away. It was just a taste.

this is why I never said ANYWHERE go here...and download iMovie.

I said if you bought a mac you have iMovie and you didn't have to pay $80 for it...so yes its free to you.

/applause

btw. a 'taste' means you either had the full blown software but only for x days before it expires or you have a gimped version of the software. iMovie is non of these things...you have the full version for as long as you like. This is not a taste unless after 30 days of use you snap your discs in half and delete iMovie from your machine. *shrug*

Since we're being pedantic in this thread, you can call Apple up and have them send you the original system discs for your computer, which would include the ilife install. You might have to pay $5 shipping.

If you have an old as shit mac that you somehow managed to get without the original system discs, downloading MovieMaker isn't going to do you much good is it?
