I was getting bored listening to the various albums I had in my "immediate" section of my car, and decided to pop in the Deftones. I hadn't listened to them in a while, and they kick ass, so why not?

They still kick just as much ass as I remember. I did some snooping around the internet and discovered a new album, titled Eros, was supposed to come out around this time of the year, but has been delayed because evidently their bass player got into a pretty nasty car wreck. He's currently in a coma and there's no telling when he's going to come out of it. In any case, the band decided to basically overhaul the entire album from the ground up in light of the situation at hand. It should be coming out sometime early to mid 2010, and if the work they're appearing to put into it is any indication, I'm hoping it will kick more ass than anything else they've released in the past.

One thing I've always noticed about the Deftones is that there is no general consensus on what their best album is. I know this might seem like the case with most bands, but bear with me here. I've noticed that the favorite albums of the fans of most other bands tend to be clumped into one or two albums; there always seem to be the 1 or 2 that are set aside and called the greatest, while all the others are somewhat left by the wayside in comparison. The Deftones are one of the few bands I can think of for the time being (besides Radiohead) where I've heard cases for every single one of their albums supposedly being the best out of the bunch.

I listened to Adrenaline again, and it definitely hasn't aged well in my mind; it doesn't rock me as hard as I remember it being able to. It's still solid as a fucking rock though; Engine No. 9 and Nosebleed were my favorite songs on that album back in the day, and they still hold that title. Around the Fur is all fucked up and doesn't work in my car, so I didn't get a chance to relive that one, but White Pony is definitely still awesome. As far as my favorite album goes, I'd probably have to choose the S/T although White Pony is a VERY close second. My favorite song the band has ever written (Hexagram) still hits like a fucking ton of bricks when you pop that bad son of a bitch in and let Track 1 play.

I never did get a chance to check out Saturday Night Wrist when it was released. I was talking to my friend about it, and he was adamant as fuck that a certain song on that album (Xerces) is arguably the best song they've ever written. While I don't think that's necessarily the case, its still a great song. I checked out the rest of the album as well, and to be honest, I think I'm a little disappointed. I keep finding myself liking only a select few songs on the album.

Oh well. In any case, here's to Eros, the Deftones themselves, and to Chi Cheng and his recovery before too much longer. I used to remember the Deftones being clumped together with so many other shitty bands, and shitty genres..........but that never really seemed to be the case with me personally. They were, in my mind, fucking lightyears ahead of all these other bands they were clumped together with. Most of those other bands (in particular, nu metal) aren't around anymore. The Deftones on the other hand, they're still alive, kicking, and they are every bit as good today as they were in their heyday. If you are like me and you put them off for a few years, haven't listened to them in a long time, and missed the latest album, or if you're the person that just never got a chance to check out this amazing band, do yourself a favor and listen to them. You won't regret it.

So concludes my retrospective/review/rant.

probably could have revived the other deftones thread.

anyways, you're probably the only person ive ever heard say the self titled is their favorite. i mostly hear arguments for adrenaline. personally i also like all the albums, but certainly not equally. but not being able to pick a favorite is nothing new for me, i'd have a hard time picking for almost any band i like.

as for chi... it sucks. at this point, i don't think he has much of a chance of making any kind of real recovery. after this long in a coma, he most likely has pretty bad brain damage.

Really? I've heard several people claim it as their favorite. It's been a long time since I've brought the band up around any of my friends, so these opinions might have changed at this point.

but yeah..........that sucks about Chi, and the sad thing is is that you're probably right about the brain damage.

as far as I know, they are holding out on Eros. That album is basically done but they are not releasing it at the moment. The album they will be releasing early next year is actually an entire different album they have written since Chi has been in the hospital.

and as far as favorite album? yea its hard to pick, I love em all. I used to think adrenaline was my favorite (it was my first deftones album, first CD from any band, etc. etc.) and its still awesome, but I think that the fact I still wear a worn out "white pony" hat on nearly a daily basis might be more than a coincidence

yeah I really liked WP the best as well, with Around the Fur close behind it. There are a few songs off SNW that I dig as well.

what i like about saturday night wrist is that my wife can actually enjoy most of it too. she is not into the early albums at all.

so then we went to see them and all they played was old stuff. she was not amused.

I wonder why. SNW is not really much mellower than deftones and white pony is even mellower minus elite imo.

the self titled is definitely my favorite, and "hexagram" my fav deftones song ever. i had been following the eros in studio blog and could not wait for that shit to come out, and was dissapointed when chi went into the coma and the album got shelved. hopefully they come out with some new material asap, im getting antsy.
