I was wanting to know if there are a few key signs to look for when purchasing a used mobile phone from a stranger (ie Craigslist, Ebay)? What precautions or checks do I need to worry about when looking at the phone in person?

Have them give you the ESN or MEID and check with the phone company. If it's a blackberry you'll probably want to make sure the PIN is clear with RIM.

^ definitely that!

I had a friend who bought a phone on craigslist and it turned out to be stolen.

great. that will provide me with info if the phone is lost or stolen.

what about the software environment of the phone? i'm kind of paranoid since i know some people are capable of installing some types of spyware on phones these days. should a full format do the job?

since i am able to meet in person, what step/procedures should be taken before purchase? obviously turning on phone and browsing around it a bit.
