im playing system shock 2 again right now, and that game is still scary as fuck. i actually found out just recently there was a mod for the game to make the enemies less creepy than they already were. fuck the fucking spiders in this game that dont die when you do a shotgun shell to the face

the forest temple. actually the entire sequence after becoming adult link scared the shit out of me back in the day. i was already scared of redeads, so arriving in a hyrule town full of them really set me off. then i had to run through a fucking maze underneath a graveyard, and then the fucking forest temple. i mean fuck, man.

ending sequence in EB with the robots

the world war 1 level in eternal darkness

i also want to mention classic moves in games. when you have somebody trailing you in mario kart, green shell to the face is fucking classic.

For the life of me I can't remember the name of this game. Its an older game, but I remember an early scene where you are in this big industrial building, walking down a dim long corridor. You have for the duration of the game so far known there is something out there, but then when you least want it to happen, you hear something break, and the lights start going out one at a time along the corridor until its pitch black. Then you hear this shriek and drop your flashlight. When you finally pick it up and turn it on there is this alien thing coming at you and you have to run for your life...Haha it was so damn scary

FEAR 1 actually scared me more than FEAR 2. Dead Space was creepy as hell and had some scary moments while also being an awesome game. A lot of people say that Resident Evil 4 was scary for some reason. I just thought it was pure awesome except for the chainsaw things when you have to jump into that pit.

Bioshock

One of the first levels, I go up into this corner of an operating room to get one of those tapes, stand there and listen to it for a moment and it's talking about all this creepy surgical stuff.

Then turn around and there's a guy RIGHT BEHIND ME.

the town in half life 2 where everything is on fire and there's a new type of zombie thing that comes flying at your face, and there's an old dude with a shotgun.

I don't remember the name, I am sure someone on here does, but that place scared the shit out of me.

When I was younger playing Resident Evil really freaked me out. So my solution was to turn on classical music while I played and I ended up not getting freaked out so much.

Classical music does not help when playing (or even watching someone else play) Silent Hill...

Any godamn Silent Hill. Ever since I played 2, radio static creeps me the fuck out.

There's also a scene in Condemned (I think thats the title) where you're walking through a dark room filled with mannequins. Once you get to the middle of the room, you hear a small sound. You turn around (turning your back on the mannequins in front of you) and the fucking mannequins you passed earlier are now in different positions, slightly closer. Then you turn the way you were facing originally, and THOSE mannequins have moved closer too. Then you turn back again and mannequins are at arms length.

^I don't remember the classical music. I just remember the radio static and the eery SILENCE.

Haven't played many of the games mentioned here, but Dead Space is about the scariest game I've ever played.

That game makes me very jumpy

alien vs predator when you're playing as marine and its dark as shit and the motion detector is doing its little scan noise. The atmosphere was fantastic because you're waiting for something to ping on your detector but nothing really does, you start to get used to the doors and stuff causing pings, and then BLAMMO ALIENS!!!

(PC) StarCraft- "Nuclear Launch Detected"

(N64) StarWars Shadows of the Empire - Fighting that robot in the junkyard

Friday the 13th for NES was pretty scary when I was 7/8

Another scary game that I highly recommend getting DOSBox for:

Last Half of Darkness
download it here: http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/abandonware/pc/adventure/games_k_l/last_half_of_darkness.html

The original Half Life scared the shit out of me. It was just because of the things that hang from the ceiling and pull you up into them. For some reason those things terrified me. I think it was because so many times I didn't notice them and suddenly found myself rising upwards then I would look up and HOLY SHIT.

Guess I'm lucky that intellivision was cutting edge when I was at an age where I'd get scared by games. Kinda hard to be afraid of Space Hawk, Maze-a-Tron, Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack, and Swords & Serpents (which incidentally was the best game ever when I was a kid).

Maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wishbringer. Just because I had a very active imagination back then.

i really wish they would remake the first silent hill like they did for resident evil

i never played it and don't want to because the graphics are so dated, the impact would not be the same

one of the things that made silent hill 2 so scary was that the graphics were probably the best i had seen at that point on the ps2

silent hill 3 was just not as scary - i just think the story and situations were not as eerie

A couple from classic EverQuest:

In the basement of Unrest: freaked me the hell out always, especially with the old skeleton models. and then the always "a festering hag begins to cast a spell.."

qeynos aqueducts & freeport sewers: never know when you'll come face to face with a drowned citizen in those winding caverns.

^I never played that a whole lot, so my characters always sucked. Thus, whenever I would go through a forest or other place that was above my level with no guards around I would be completely on edge.

Not so much because it was "spooky" scary...but I really really didn't want to die and have to come all the way back and get my stuff

The original alone in the dark for PC...the first attic level when the creature busts in before you figure out you have to block the window and the floor access. The first time it happened i flipped the hell out. More startled than scared though i guess.

That part where you have to protect the President's daughter in RE4 and you can only see 5 feet in front of you and there are villagers everywhere.

In Super Metroid when you meet the giant Metroid baby and later when it comes in and saves you. Freaked. Me. Out.

The very first time I played through Deus Ex, when I explored the Hong Kong laboratory level I found those radiation-spitting aliens, among other shit that just plain weirded me out. Not necessarily scary, but I just wasn't prepared to deal with it on some level. I hated going through that level during repeat playthroughs for a while after that. Same deal with the phazon mines in Metroid Prime.

The Forest Temple didn't scare me in the slightest, but that sound thosee giant hand things make when they're getting ready to fall on you from the ceiling use to freak me out something fierce.

That one level in Max Payne when you're getting ready to kill the satanic-obsessed guy. I was prepared for the devil himself to pounce out of my screen or something. The random screams during the nightmare sequences would also cause me to shit myself.

Thief 2 on the rooftop level where you go into the necromancer tower look at some weird book and then turn around and there's a zombie.

I'm pretty sure the guy's shadow appears on the wall you're facing, too, before you turn around.

I forgot about that, the drug induced tripping/evil scenes were pretty unnerving
