I was playing Fallout 3 the other day and came upon a few super mutants...well I was killing off the first two with some plasma rifle shots to the head, but after I kill them, I see the final one deliver the crushing blow with a sledgehammer to my beloved companion Dogmeat

Also in the game The Lost Crown., the story of train station director was even sadder than the death of Lisa Garland. Wish I could find a clip of it.

After beating all the fighters in Street Fighter IV, only to realize that I'll NEVER EVER be able to beat Seth (other than on easiest/easy mode).

My thumbs are raw.

Metroid - the entire game depressed me as a kid
Chrono Trigger- Chrono dying
MGS- Sniper Wolf encounter
Oblivion- drinking the potion or whatever and killing all the "trolls"
MGS4- Snake's "suicide"

oh yeah and the original Half-Life ending- either way

Seconded. I also think the ending to Twilight Princess was sad. The music seemed to really drive it home, though.

FFVII: Aeris' death
FFVI: Celes' (attempt at) suicide / Cid's death
Actraiser: Kassandora / The Invention of Music
Dragon Warrior IV: Beginning of Chapter V, when the hero's town is destroyed / hero's friend sacrifices her life. Also, end of Chapter IV, with Mara and Nara fleeing after failing to exact their revenge.
Dragon Quest V: Hero's father is killed / hero is pressed into ten years of slavery (also, when you're turned into a statue for 8 years)
Chronotrigger: When the three first learn about the Day of Lavos. Also if you fail to defeat Lavos (Witnessing the last moments of the human survivors / "But the future refused to change")
MGS3: The ending / The Boss' grave (seriously, I tear up a little every time)
MGS: Sniper Wolf (natch)
MGS2: Emma's death
Breath of Fire 2: When at the "big church" and the two resistance members are publicly executed / Katt agreeing to marry the resistance leader / Refusing to enter the underworld ending
SoulBlazer: Ending; more bittersweet than anything else. "Lisa stood alone" / hero returns with no memory

I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting. ChronoTrigger has some of my favorites, along with Celes and MGS3 as being some of the most emotional points in games I can remember.

http://fable.wikia.com/wiki/Chesty

also the whole thing where you go back in time with your sister and she sets up the perfect day for you... :'(

gears of war 2 when the dude finds his wife. not only sad but really creepy.

There are several sad moments in Chrono Cross (can't believe it's been 10 years since it came out)

*When Serge is turned into Lynx and he runs into Kid and she doesn't realize who he really is.
*When Serge fights the guy who sailed along with his father to find a cure for Serge's illness

seriously, the ending to Mother 3 wins this thread.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89Lj00wPlzk

I've never cried at a video game, but this ending brought me very, very close.

Mother 3 is a pretty emotional game overall. Here's another sadder excerpt:

Oddly enough, I have been playing FF6 and just got to the World of Ruin.

You can save Cid, although its not as fun.

the only thing i could think of was the "sorry but your princess is in another castle." from Super Mario Bros.

other than that, I have never played any of the games you nerds have mentioned in this thread.

the worst feeling I have gotten in a video game is when CJ's homies double-cross him by working for the ballas.

the saddest part of mgs is buying it after hearing everyone hail it as one of the best games ever, beating it in two days by repeatedly tapping the attack button to kill the final boss, and realizing you got hosed for $50.
