99 b/c it was worn by the great one. When Gretzky started playing he idolized Howe, and even got a now famous picture of him with his idol when he was a boy. He took up the #9 jersey b/c of Howe. When Gretzky started out in the WHA at the age of 17, a veteran player on his team already had 9, so Gretzky had to wear 99 instead. When I first started out playing hockey I wore 9 for a few years, until the coach, who was originally from Michigan, had his son wear it b/c of Gordie Howe. The kid didn't even really know anything about him, and besides he played defense anyways, so he wasn't going to be emulating Gordie Howe anytime soon. Truthfully the kid was more of a Bob Probert since he liked to fight and had anger issues. I took up 14 after that and have loved it since. Few people know that Howe wore 17 during his rookie season. Howe is the only player in NHL history to have played in 5 different decades (1940s-1980s, minus a few years when he played in the WHA).

2 and 3 are the best numbers ever

^^^ I saw Gordie Howe play his last game on the Detroit Vipers... almost got a goal too. Crowd would have erupted.
It was cool they didn't make him wear a helmet, (cause he's old school)

He only played the first shift then changed.

#8 (Old Kobe) and #24 (New Kobe). I also like in football when D-Lineman have single digit numbers like Mario Williams (#9).

I think #s are stupid. They should just have their last names on their jerseys.
