For those of you that live/have lived on campus and have played some video games, how would you rate the quality of the internet when playing on Xbox Live?

Maybe it depends on the dorm, but I have tried playing in Bragaw and Wolf Village, and both lag like hell. Usually I have 4 ping bars, but that doesnt mean anything when I try playing Call of Duty or Halo and have my bullets not register. Honestly I cant tell a difference between playing on my old garbage Roadrunner and Resnet, though the speedtest results are VERY different.

I lived in Wolf Village two years ago and it was flawless. I could play while downloading stuff and still have no lag

I know I had a period of severe unexplained packet loss in Wood when I was hardcore on the Warcraft wagon. I remember clevow was following up on the issues, but I don't know that ComTech ever did anything with the information provided.

If you're in Bragaw you need to be more concerned with downloading at 4MB/s than CoD pings.

bragaw worked amazingly 98% of the time. tucker had some problems but it wasn't rarely unplayable. that's the biggest thing I miss about living on campus.

This thread gets made every year. Try calling 515-HELP, e-mailing resnet@ncsu.edu, or something.

I don't think the problem is resnet. The problem is likely whatever host Xbox Live is selecting.

I know when you play Halo 3, it trends your connection (I don't know if this is done by the Live servers or the game). The more reliable and low-latency your connection is, the more likely you will become host. If you have a history of playing on a high latency connection, it will usually not consider you to host the game and will match you with other players with bad connections.

It took me probably 100 games after I moved to my new house with a better connection before I started seeing improvements in online play. I think the best thing to do is party up with anyone else you know who has good connections and play with them a bunch.

we haven't had any lag complaints since the bandwidth cap was raised over a year ago. most likely your lag is off campus. try connecting directly to the wall, not through a router and see if that improves anything. also try a different jack. presumably you won't see anything different. if you do, stop by the walk in center or call the help desk and we'll check it out.
