I was extremely skeptical that this movie could even be decent but it's getting pretty damn good reviews so maybe I misjudged it. I just have a hard time imagining Nick Cage doing half as good a job as Keitel did in the original. Plus the original never struck me as a film that should ever have been remade.

I have zero hesitation about claiming that you didn't get it, with statements like "The movie sucked," "shit movie," coupled with comments about Cage's acting.
It's not about "philosophical messages." It's basic understanding of what the film is doing. And if it's missed, I can definitely see why people wouldn't like it. But Herzog is undeniably a fucking master, and I guess he just punk'd you.
But fine, maybe it's simply a shit movie. Why is it a shit movie?

it's a shit movie because of how fucking stupid the plot is. A cop that abuses drugs all the time yet never takes a drug test? A dealer that just lets a cop witness them dumping a body because he might be crooked? Criminals that walk into a police precinct to tell Cage about the criminal events that recently transpired? Val Kilmer suddenly turns into a corruct cop at the end and admits that he knew about what Cage was doing all along? The three Italian mobsters that were sent to rough up cage look like a couple of Korean Halfbreeds and an english mutt? The numerous people who let themselves get robbed by a dirty cop instead of just putting the junkie cop in his place?
Cage actually did a good job of acting like a cop on a serious downward spiral, but the complete lack of an accent coupled with horrible writing and plot development left him as an unbelievable character.
Herzog may have punked me out of two hours of my life, but he didn't do it by directing a masterpiece. You can tell that most of the scenes were poorly thought out and a lot of the supporting characters were poorly chosen. 4/10/2010 6:40:47 PM |

Quote : | "A cop that abuses drugs all the time yet never takes a drug test?" |
A cop that can get drugs from a police property room through friends and his own self cant find a way to weasle out of a drug test, or fake a drug test?

Ok, its obvious this dealer is also a killer who's damn near the Scarface of New Orleans. You really think he cares when its just him and his boys and one prospect crooked cop around.
Quote : | "Criminals that walk into a police precinct to tell Cage about the criminal events that recently transpired?" |
More like highly connected criminals who are sitting down with a detective in a precinct that is likely pretty crooked alltogether.
Quote : | "Val Kilmer suddenly turns into a corruct cop at the end and admits that he knew about what Cage was doing all along?" |
At the end? What about the very begginning. Did that introduction tell you nothing about Kilmer's role. Again, Holy shit.

no, he can't. stealing shit from lockup because you've got blackmail on one person does not mean you should be able to run rampant through a department, showing up stoned to everything you work on. even if he could, a five second statement about how he avoids police drug test policies would have sufficed. but no, that would have been too much to ask.
Quote : | "Ok, its obvious this dealer is also a killer who's damn near the Scarface of New Orleans. You really think he cares when its just him and his boys and one prospect crooked cop around. " |
he's not even the fucking Bennie Blanco of New Orleans, and he kills witnesses on the regular to protect his little halfass operation. He doesn't even trust people in his own neighborhood to keep their mouths shut, and you think he's going to trust a cop? Holy fuck you're retarded.
Quote : | "More like highly connected criminals who are sitting down with a detective in a precinct that is likely pretty crooked alltogether." |
more like petty bookies and half-thug wannabees walking into a precinct with a lot of not-so-crooked cops to talk about shit that has no business being discussed around other cops. Why would a bookie confront a delinquent debt in a precinct knowing good and damn well he has no way of enforcing on that debt when Cage tells him to fuck off? Why would daddy's boy walk in to say "you killed my henchmen, but we're cool with that. no hard feelings"?
Quote : | "What the fuck does that even mean? You know there's a city called New Orleans? " |
it means the plot holes went right over the top of your fucking head. You were so engulfed in the slapstick stupidity of this movie that you missed major fucking problems with the casting. Are you aware that New Orleans has a larger Italian mafia presence in the US than any city outside of NYC? are you aware the Italians like to use their own kind for muscle? The director is so fucking engulfed in making sure he has animals in every scene that he doesn't bother to cast humans that fit the part they're going to play. He managed to cast snakes, iguanas, alligators, and a dog into the movie for no other reason than to remind you that he's Herzog, but getting a couple of Italians to play the role of Italian mobsters was too difficult?
Quote : | "At the end? What about the very begginning. Did that introduction tell you nothing about Kilmer's role. Again, Holy shit. " |
I've never met a cop that wouldn't trample the fuck out of the rights of a convicted criminal under the moral grounds of "he's a criminal, so who gives a fuck". With that being said, I've never known one that would turn a blind eye to a junkie partner who broke the law every chance they got. There's a huge fucking difference between the two, and the opening scene did nothing to hint at what you'd hear in the end scene.4/11/2010 1:34:19 AM |

a major point of the movie seemed to be to poke fun at fans of police crime dramas and dark drug movies. The problem is that those two groups should have been the target audience for this movie, so you feel like the director is intentionally trying to make fun of you for watching his movie, but he's incapable of doing so in a believable manner.4/11/2010 10:44:28 AM |

Everybody knows he's on meds for his back and you dont need a detailed explanation around every corner to make a movie. This isn't fight club and i dont need to know how he wipes his ass. Man, your imagination sucks.
Quote : | "not even the fucking Bennie Blanco of New Orleans.....doesn't even trust people in his own neighborhood to keep their mouths shut, and you think he's going to trust a cop? Holy fuck you're retarded." |
Whoever the hell Bennie Blanco is, you're still missing the point. He was alone with him, no backup, with his gang, at an undisclosed destination. It doesn't matter whether he trusted him or not. Whats cage gonna say, "I know where a body is and I know who did it." Ok fine, back to square one. Your witnesses, testamonies? Just a heavily medicated detective in a downward spiral versus a high class lawyer. Why do you need this shit spelled out for you. And he was basically the scarface of New Orleans asshole. When you're pushing that much weight and have a mansion set up like that its not so far a stretch. Come the fuck on.
Quote : | "more like petty bookies and half-thug wannabees walking into a precinct with a lot of not-so-crooked cops" |
It can go either way, you just choose to view it this way cause you have a bug up your cooter.
Quote : | "Why would a bookie confront a delinquent debt in a precinct knowing good and damn well he has no way of enforcing on that debt when Cage tells him to fuck off? Why would daddy's boy walk in to say "you killed my henchmen, but we're cool with that. no hard feelings"?" |
jesus christ, You heard the man when he said that the guys who will come after him dont care whether he's a cop or not. And the politician's son was a weird piece of shit coward who beats up prostitutes, you do the math. Why am I even arguing with you? Seriously this is not something I feel I should be doing on a Sunday morning. Having to spoon feed you shit that you didn't even digest when you first watched the movie.
Quote : | "the plot holes went right over the top of your fucking head..........are you aware the Italians like to use their own kind for muscle?" |
Do you sit down with a notepad and make correlation charts when you watch movies to make sure they're Italian enough or Harrison Ford enough or something. Who the fuck cares that 2 of the 3 guys weren't itailian looking. Get off the fucking Italian subject already. It'll be alright, the don wont roll over in his grave. I'll give it to you that this movie was slightly slapstick, slightly. But your head is way up your ass if you think this movie is ridden with plot holes cause it most certainly is not.
Quote : | "I've never met a cop that wouldn't trample the fuck out of the rights of a convicted criminal under the moral grounds of "he's a criminal, so who gives a fuck". And I've never seen somebody so formulaic in how a movie's plot is supposed to unfold. This isn't Dick Tracy, its called Bad Lieutanant. Ever seen Bad Santa? Its a little similar, in how he steps on every thing, including old people who get in his way.
And about Kilmer knowing and not saying anything to the end, there were 3 prior instances of him showing immoral character. I'll leave it to you to find them if you decide to watch it again. 4/11/2010 11:36:05 AM |
