Should we be worried about TOB going to UVA or is that a nonissue? I know he has coached there before and may still have connections...just wondering

Here are some other names floating out there for UVA (from the Charlottesville paper):
http://www2.dailyprogress.com/cdp/sports/columnists/ratcliffe_on/article/if_groh_is_gone_whos_next_in_line/49251/
Quote :
"- Mike London, age 49, head coach, University of Richmond. A native of Hampton, London certainly knows the UVa culture having coached here for two stints during the Groh regime. He has NFL experience and played at UR from 1979-82. He led the Spiders to the FCS national title last year and has them back in the playoffs this season. He won numerous national coach of the year awards last season and has a reputation for being a solid recruiter. London’s salary has not been disclosed, even though his contract runs through 2014 at UR.

- Charlie Strong, age 49, defensive coordinator, University of Florida. Like London, Strong has been around the block, but mostly at the FBS level (Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Florida). He’s been with the Gators since 2002. He became the first African-American coordinator in SEC history. Is known as one of the nation’s top defensive coaches. Salary: $290,000 per year.

- Gus Malzahn, 43, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Auburn. In his first year at Auburn after an eye-popping stint at Tulsa, where his 2007 offense led the nation in total offense, and finished second in 2008. In ’08, the Golden Hurricane averaged 565 yards and 47 points per game. He is credited with introducing the “wildcat” offense to major college football, having done so at Arkansas as offensive coordinator in 2006. Salary unknown.

- Troy Calhoun, 44, head coach, Air Force. Played for Fisher DeBerry and replaced the legendary coach in 2006. Has done a solid job. Served as Jim Grobe’s offensive coordinator at Ohio U. from 1995-2001 and followed Grobe to Wake Forest, where he was coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2001-03. Calhoun moved on to coach with the Denver Broncos for two years, then the Houston Texans before taking over at Air Force. Current salary is $860,000 per year, contract runs through 2013.

- Chris Petersen, 45, head coach, Boise State. Has been the Broncos’ head coach since 2006 and directs one of college football’s most exciting offenses. His record coming into this season was 46-4 and he was national coach of the year in 2006. Some say that Petersen isn’t “gettable” because of his love of the Boise area and family considerations. Current salary is $850,000.

- Al Golden, 40, head coach, Temple. Was a grad assistant under George Welsh at Virginia and left as an assistant at Penn State to become Al Groh’s defensive coordinator at Virginia in 2001. Golden, considered an up-and-comer in the coaching world, has been head coach at Temple since 2006 and led the Owls’ transition from the Big East to the Mid-America Conference. His team is 9-2 and he’s a shoo-in for MAC coach of the year honors. Golden interviewed for the UCLA head coaching job in December 2007 but withdrew his name. Salary unknown.

- Derek Dooley, 40, head coach, Louisiana Tech. Is the only head football coach and athletic director at a major college football program in the nation. Great bloodlines — son of Georgia legend Vince Dooley and nephew of former North Carolina coach Bill Dooley. Derek Dooley was a wide receiver for Virginia on some of the Cavaliers’ greatest teams. He graduating in 1990, having played with Shawn Moore and Herman Moore. Was an All-ACC academic selection. Earned a law degree from Georgia. Coached under Nick Saban at LSU and the Miami Dolphins. Salary unknown.

- Tim Murphy, 53, head coach, Harvard. If its football knowledge and academics that Virginia wants, Murphy has to be considered. Has a 97-52 record with the Ivy League school, making him the second-winningest coach in Crimson history. His ’04 squad went unbeaten. Coached at Maine, where he won, and at Cincinnati, where he did not. Known as one of the top teachers and motivators in the game. Salary unknown.

- Tommy Tuberville, 55, not coaching. Served as head coach at Auburn from 1999-2008 and was head coach at Ole Miss prior to moving to Auburn. Was the 2004 national coach of the year. The only football coach in Auburn history to beat Alabama six times in a row. Considered a top-notch coach and gentleman. Big in the community. Said recently that he wanted to return to a BCS school. Last salary: $2.8 million per year."

I can't see Peterson leaving Boise for UVA, and it's difficult to see him coming east for anything other than a premier job.

Tuberville seems to be the one big name they could get.

I could see them going for Strong, Malzahn or Golden in some order, with London as a fallback.

Tuberville would be a good hire for UVA to jump back in the ACC mix. He might be able to grab a few players from the SEC dominated recruiting regions and bring in some good coordinators. Interested to see if UVA will pay enough money to get him or settle for someone less famous and pay less.

Peterson is a longshot I think especially since he is moving far from his domain in Idaho. Charlottesville is pretty comparable to Boise though (small town feel in the mountains). Would he even be able to recruit in this area though?

I'm in grad school at Temple right now and everyone loves Al Golden and how he's elevated the program to being competitive. He is a very good coach. It'd be funny if they went off and hired Bud Foster away. It would be similar to how Michigan hired Bo Schembechler away from Woody Hayes' staff at Ohio State, and certainly worked out for UM.

There is so much smoke out in the media about the Notre Dame job, much of it without fire. Part of it is traced back to ND's arrogance though.

If Notre Dame has a lick of sense, they will skip the Meyer/Stoops laughers and go straight for Brian Kelly. If they mess around, they will miss on Brian Kelly and end up settling.

I wonder if Cincy might go after Holtz if Brian Kelly leaves?

Even though he won't end up in either job, Butch Davis will work a raise out of this.

Butch won't be at Notre Dame... but it wouldn't surprise me if Stoops takes the ND job, that he would go to OU...

There are a lot of haters of ND, but you would have to still call it one of the top 5 coaching positions in college football in terms of resources, money, prestige and potential, no?

Fuck just college football...Notre Dame is the coaching job in all of sports.

It’s bigger than North Carolina basketball, it’s bigger than the New York Yankees, and it’s bigger than the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite all the ways winning there has been made more difficult in recent years, its still the premier program in the country, and any coach who leads them to glory will be a bigger deal than Carroll, Meyer, Stoops, Tressel, etc.

Notre Dame is the best coaching job in the country. Also, I'm posting from the 1930's.

Notre Dame's time is done. They won't relax their recruiting standards and their fan base expects to win a championship every year. That is an insane amount of pressure for any coach to deal with.

The Weis coaching situation has held the sports world hostage for weeks now, and it’s going to be front page worldwide news once the situation is rectified.

Do you think any other school would have the same level of press were it in the same situation ?

When Florida, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Alabama, etc. struggle for a few years in football, its a big deal...they fire their coach and hopefully get back to prominence quickly

When Notre Dame struggles for a few years, everyone shits their pants...its a whole different level of scrutiny than anywhere else

I'm not saying its the most desirable job in the country...lots of coaches would rather be elsewhere the talent is more plentiful and the media is less scrutinizing

But its the most visible job in the country...the only school with their own National TV contract

Everyone has an opinion of ND...you either love them or hate them, just like the Yankees and Cowboys

Maybe after another 5-7 seasons of 5-7 seasons we can reevaluate this, but as of now, its still number 1 IMO

^ No one wants to go there because no one wants to put in all the hard work it takes to win there, and you really can't blame them

At most big football schools, for the players, its football, girls and parties...at ND, its football, Mass and schoolwork...they have the winning expectations of Florida and Texas and the academic expectations of Stanford and Duke...and as we all know, most of the good players are dumbasses

^^NBC may very well sell some games to Versus, especially given the fact that they play the likes of Western Michigan, Tulsa, and Utah at home next year

But they feel the fact that they get the full ~13 million whenever they go to the BCS instead of splitting it with everyone else is reason alone to keep them Independent

I disagree, and I think ND in the Big 10 would a beneficial for both parties, but it remains a longshot

FSU to make announcement on Bowden's future on Tuesday.

(i.e. whether Bowden will be back for one last season or Jimbo Fisher takes over immediately)

I expect most of the defensive staff will be gone either way, and Jimbo Fisher will likely have final say on hiring decisions.

Turner Gill coming up in discussions for the Kansas job. Mangino's firing is only a matter of time, as the lawyers try to work out a case/settlement for firing with cause.

Also word on the street is that the only condition that Bowden would be allowed to return is if he was only the coach for ceremonial purposes. Sounds like he would step down, but I don't know how credible it is.

And before any PackPride wannabes start suggesting it, no, Chuck is not going to be our new DC and it would be a horrible idea that would never work.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/terrapins-insider/2009/12/friedgen_to_return_for_10th_se.html

Friedgen will be retained by Maryland. His contract expires at the end of the 2011 season (Franklin is already designated as te coach in waiting). You have to wonder if the coach in waiting tag is keeping Friedgen his job, since they are essentially stuck with him or his assistant.

Also of note:
Quote :
"It would have cost Maryland $4 million to buy out the remaining two years on Friedgen’s contract. Sources who have been briefed on the financial details of Friedgen’s contract had said that the cost of the buyout would not prevent Maryland from making a change, should school officials feel one was warranted.

But the prospect of buying out Friedgen during an economic downturn drew reaction from several prominent individuals, including Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who last week told reporters “were they to decide that there needed to be a change, I would hope that they not use public funds to buy out that contract.”"

Maryland football is in tough financial shape, they missed season ticket projections by $600K this year and expecting to be $1 million short next year. They also only had 35K fans at the last game, the lowest since Vanderlindin's last game.
