1st off: The Guardian has a reputation as a platform for liberal and left-wing opinions. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guardian )

Quote :
"But Siddall is still confident that volunteer slavery will be the future economic model. "I have no doubt that slavery will return as the world's energy resources get increasingly scarce." This proved a little "off-message" for the BBC. "

Human labor has historically been the safest protector of the environment. Everything else has huge negative consequences no matter what.

Arguments? No I don't own any cotton fields. ...........yet

Then you have never traveled. The third world makes very little use of non-human labor, and as a result has a devastated environment (Air and water pollution in the machine free India is far worse than the machine rich European countries with a similar population density).

That said, economists have studied slavery and found it to be almost as productive as free labor markets, decidedly NOT more productive. Therefore, a society built upon slavery would be just as destructive of its environment as one that was not. However, that assumes you were born into slavery, as a threat upon free men to become slaves would disrupt the propensity to save and produce, diverting effort away from sustainable production and into the political system in an effort to avoid slavery.
