Thats a 2007? interior looks like a 1997. also I thought it was a 1997 since it was you doing the buying. This must be the newest car you've ever owned! Have you ever owned a car that was newer than 2000? 12/7/2009 9:15:28 PM |

The interior is current, and I really don't think it looks that old at all. I don't know if I've owned a car newer than a 2000, but I've owned cars that were 3 years old or newer.
Anyway, I'm buying but it's for my sister. I'd MUCH rather buy an S60-R that's an 05 for the same $. 12/7/2009 10:17:45 PM |

Im always split on these cars. I like them a lot on the outside actually, it would look good with a moderate tint. However the interiors get me, especially lighter colors (which I dislike universally, but especially when theyre clean/basic/plain/boring). 12/7/2009 10:42:02 PM |

the interior is pretty spartan but i guess you could also say its simple and clean.
i'm guessing the back seat is pretty much worthless?

I test drove one before I settled on the S60. I preferred the smaller dimensions of the S40 and tighter turning circle (the turning radius on my S60 is huge). But I went with the S60 because of the bigger trunk and more powerful engine.
However, it drove really well. Pretty good acceleration and decent driving dynamics in comparison to its Japanese competitors, considering it had the basic 140 hp engine. (not found in US)
This must be the base model with the 170 hp engine. I am sure it drives pretty nicely. And the 227 hp T5 model is a beast, if you can get your hands on it.
As for reliability of that particular engine, I don't know.
Volvo needs to bring back the S60R and also make an S40R. 12/8/2009 7:57:01 AM |

I wasn't a fan of the S40's interior and thought it felt a little cheap for what is supposed to be a near-luxury car, even a smaller one. The S60's, on the other hand, was much nicer. Didn't drive the S40 so can't comment there. 12/8/2009 10:04:33 AM |

It is Weaver Motorsports' lot. BTW, it feels odd buying a car for somebody else. My sister wants a black one with the tan leather interior, which means my hands are mostly tied for negotiation...
So, I like the driving dynamics of the S40 quite a bit, but the overall performance envelope of the S60(R) eclipses it by a wide enough margin that overall I'd easily choose that. I agree that the interior of the S60 is very high rate, and though I can see why one would think the S40's interior doesn't look upmarket, that's not at all the feeling I got. It's spartan, sterile/minimalistic, which I appreciate quite a bit, I also think it looks ultra modern.
I would not be buying one for myself without the sports package, a manual transmission and the turbo motor. That said, maybe golovko brings up a good point, I have yet to own anything newer than 2000 (I think). The only cars I'd be interested in that are newer are the S60R/V70R, the Evo 8/9, and 996 C2/GT3. The newest one of those would be 04 or 05.
Anyway, I think I approve this car. I should be picking it up today if all goes to plan. 12/8/2009 10:45:57 AM |

How do you feel buying a more expensive Ford Focus(Euro)? 12/8/2009 2:41:45 PM |

This chassis is designed and produced by Volvo, at a Volvo plant in Europe. The entire drivetrain is Volvo, and shared with other Volvos, though the chassis is licensed out to Ford as well as Mazda.
Anyway, I would've gone further and gotten an Astra in this market, though really an S60 is such a better car that I can't believe my sister wanted it so badly.
I am driving it as we speak. It's decent, but very basic. I will say it feels very well made. 12/8/2009 8:43:30 PM |

I'll take mine with the turbo engine.
Or an S60R, that would certainly be nice. I drove one of the 2.5T S60's and liked that quite a lot, which immediately moved the R version way up my "cars that would make a good DD a couple years from now" list.

Evo IX would be an '06, and probably worthwhile over the VIII if you plan on modding. Makes big power with nothing but I/E/ECU/MBC.
and yeah, I dig hotrod wagons, too. What all is out there (in the U.S. market)? S4 Avant (and RS4 version), V60R/V70R, new STi (if you call it a wagon)...
I guess you could count the WRX wagon (though it's not that much of a hotrod in stock form).

The new STi is definitely a hatch, not a wagon.
The WRX wagon is tight, as is the Saabaru version which surprisingly goes for less than the Subie version sometimes. Maybe not a hotrod in stock form, but they benefit well from minor mods.

The 911 has Fabspeed full exhaust (will be ripping it out the moment I get back into Raleigh), partial intake (just a smoother tube, will stay). Short shift kit, which will also stay. As for options, it's got LSD (how do I find them!), and traction, as well as Xenon/Litronics. It actually does NOT have the leather dash. I prefer the leather, but whatever. It also has "full leather rear seats", I've never even seen this option before, they're certainly different and cushier than any other I've seen, for the rear. Makes no sense... OK, so on top of that, it has the comfort seats, I need to be looking for some buckets ASAP. It's on 17 inch wheels, and stock suspension, so we need work...
Volvo wagons (or any other hot wagons/hatches) are the coolest as far as I'm concerned. Alas, they don't make a rear engined wagon, so I'm still stuck... And, I wouldn't own anything new from Audi, they're very cool but I don't have deep enough pockets to buy one under warranty. 12/11/2009 11:02:21 AM |
